I really hate this clock radio. It boasts some of the worst usability I have ever come across on an electrical product. The actual process of setting the alarm seems to be a real chore considering you have to turn the radio on to set it (why?????). I have the display disabled most of the time because the brightness is so rediculous; it's like sleeping next to a super nova. In addition, the alarm doesn't seem to turn itself off, so if you happen to stay out at night you'll arrive home to the sound of an extremely loud alarm that no doubt will have your neighbours going insane. I've had a Freeplay Ranger for several years. My initial reactions to it were "it's quite heavy for a portable" and "it's a bit difficult to wind up". However, I've really come to appreciate its rugged construction and the freedom that comes from not having to use batteries.

Yes, the tuning and volume knobs are recessed, but I find that I _can_ adjust them one-handed. Winding the radio can be a bit of a challenge sometimes (hence the four star rating), but there is a knack to it that can be mastered. If you want a wind-up radio and you don't have reasonably strong wrists this one probably isn't for you ... except that it also has facilities for charging the batteries both from the mains and from the built-in solar cell.

Roberts RD 49 White Radio

From past experience, Roberts radios have better than average sound and this radio is no exception. I would say that on FM it's evev better than its older counterparts. It looks smart and the setting of pre-sets was easier than some other radios I've had. The digital display of the name of the FM station you've tuned to is a great help, especially if you take the radio to a different part of the country and need to find your favourite station on a different frequency.
We haven't got DAB yet, but I'm looking forward to getting them soon.

tbh it could be the placement, but i find it hard to believe that it could be this bad

the fact that its one of the ugliest pieces of kit ive laid eyes on has to be said too. pushing down both atena's has resulted in one snapping and another one bending, poor build quality
