Olympus DS-50 Digital Voice Recorder with MP3/WMA Playback 1GB

The quality of the audio recordings that this little device produces is astounding for something so small. Its memory capacity and battery life are huge. It is sturdy, small, lightweight, well-designed and very easy to use. I have used it for recording everything from interviews to symphony concerts and it has coped superbly every time. The recording quality is far superior to anything I have heard from a tape recorder and the files produced can (if they are not too long) be e-mailed easily to anyone who needs them. I would happily give it 5 stars on every scale I can think of.

The attractive-looking Olympus LS-10 offers a solid construction and well-thought-out ergonomics which are ahead of other similarly-priced compact recorders.

Battery life is outstanding. Having an internal 2Gb memory in addition to taking SD cards is also a welcome feature. The LCD screen provides more information at-a-glance than some of its likely competitors (eg the Marantz PMD 620) yet remains clearly readable. The button layout, and the inclusion of an 'erase' button, is well designed.

The internal mics and pre-amp provide a pretty good sound, with little audible hiss, although anyone seeking to use the LS-10 outdoors a lot may often find themselves often selecting the high sensitivity setting.

I use this for recording my singing lesson. Quality of sound for this is excellent. Burns onto a CD wonderfully. It does occasionally cause problems with my IPOD but just doing a basic reset on the machine sorts it out without losing any data.

Sony Digital Dictation

Compared to the other Sony IC recorders I have (ICD-MS515 and ICD-BP150) the ICD-MX20 is a major let down - especially for the price. Although ICD-MX20 is very well-built it just cannot make good recordings. There are lots of phasing artefacts - even in the highest-quality mode.

For me the supplied software - Digital Voice Editor 3 - is functional enough if it could get along okay with the drivers for my Edirol FA-101 firewire audio interface that I use as an external soundcard. But clicking the volume control in DVE 3 seems to disable the Edirol drivers meaning that they have to be reinstalled. So I have removed DVE 3 from the PC and now use Sony's WMP plug-in to play .msv files on the computer. Then, for converting .msv files to other formats, ... Read More:
