Sonic Tonic

by: Ron Blake

July 25, 2005
This is a real tonic of an album from Ron Blake that combines many musical styles and influences and mixes them into one well conceived album.Mixing straight ahead jazz, funk and Afro Carribean rhythms into a varied but enjoyable set of songs is no easy feat but Blake has really pulled it off here.
Standout tracks are "Tom Blake" which has a lively funky rhythm, "Invocation(dance of fire)" is a multi layered fusion piece with Afro Carribean overtones,"Pissaro's Floor" is the sort of piece John coltrane played during his "spiritual" period with a mellow toned sax and gentle percussion and there is even a space for Sting's "Windmills of your mind" which gets a fairly faithfull treatment considering some of the other material.

California

by: Perry Blake

October 13, 2003
Despite causing quite a stir amongst the music press Europe-wide for his eponymously entitled debut in 1998; along with further acclaim for its equally moving sequel a year later, Perry Blake's unconventional talent has remained virtually unnoticed, particularly in his native Ireland and in the UK. After being dropped by Polydor, Blake's distinctive melancholic delivery and moody song writing were picked up by French independent, Naïve. And thankfully so.

Here, for the third album Blake has been given the opportunity to expand on his unique marriage of painfully exposed lyrics and sumptuous melodies. Where his last album, 'Still Life', took an even darker route than the first, 'California', adopts a more upbeat approach. For 'California', ... Read More:

The Tide of the Century

by: Tim Blake

May 20, 2003
I bought this on the strength of the above review and I have to say, that it's not what I expected at all. I put the cd on hoping for some ghostly echoes of Crystal Machine and New Jerusalem... But alas they weren't there! If you love those two albums, as I do, then don't buy this... It's quite awful! Sorry Tim...
