I have liked Blake Shelton ever since I first heard the song "Austin". His first album was great. His second album "Dreamer" was good. His third "Barn & Grill" was a disappointment. This is a return to form. It is a more consistent album with better songs. It has a harder edge than previous albums. It has a nice mix of uptempo and slower songs. Highlights include 'It aint easy being me', 'The Last Country Song' and 'The More I drink'. Modern country. Good album. Enjoyable. Worth a listen.

I bought this for Antara, which is a piece dominated by the sound of Peruvian pipes sampled for synthesizer so that they can be sounded in any octave. It is an exciting piece! The other two longer orchestral pieces are also very interesting and enjoyable. The song is a setting of Stevens. The very short piece is just a test on synths of the Peruvian pipe sound and is neither here nor there. I'd recommend this for Antara. The CD is mastered at a very low level and mine had a manufacturing defect which showed up all the more as the sound level was so low. So you might want to order this on a route where you are confident of the returns policy.

Norman Blake is one of the finest american roots musicians around today. He is a fantastic guitarist, fiddler, and dobro player. He has played with Steve Earle, Doc Watson, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many many more, including most recently being involved in Oh Brother, where art thou?. He's clearly in love with the music and as much an archivist of the tradition as a modern day performer. This CD is a "best of" one period in his life and so is a pretty good introduction to his work. It's a mixture of his own material and interpretations of "traditional" songs and tunes. Some of it is solo, some with a few other musicians but at most it's small group playing. Mostly, it has the feel of "back-porch" music, very laid back but some of the ... Read More:

A sublime recording - magical, hypnotic and timeless!
It's difficult to label these tunes - part "Old Timey", part Bluegrass/Newgrass, part Gypsy, part Celtic etc.
Basically the mother lode in terms of ensemble mandolin music. Incredible acoustic arrangements and playing. Pretty much the best CD I've bought in the last 10 years and a constant favourite.
Norman Blake is well known for his influential flatpicking guitar but the mandolins take main billing for this one. Additionally Peter Ostroushko, Carl Jones and Nancy Blake (fantasic cello backing as well as mandolin playing), amongst others, combime to make this one something special.
Recommended unreservedly.

It's a shame that Blake has not garnered the attention some of the other American Idol alumni have.
This is a good album. It's different, not like anything on the market. It has a mix of trance sounds, RnB, Pop, Rock and a hint of ballad.
The album has a good strong start, with an interesting interlude smashing into 'Break Anotha' (his first single but in my opinion, the weakest). Then the album slowly takes us on a journey into the creative mind of Blake Lewis. His incredible vocal talents and attitude that got him so much early attention on American Idol.
'She's Makin' Me Lose It' always stands out as a favourite of mine. Loud, fast and lots of effects. Perfect for a dance floor.
'1000 Miles' is also ... Read More:
