Nikolai Demidenko recorded several programs live at Wigmore Hall in 1993 and this set was drawn from those recitals. It was originally issued by Hyperion at full price, but was reissued five years later, in 1998, at mid-price. Demidenko is one of those pianists who, like Murray Perahia, can truly be considered a poet of the piano. He has incredible technique and can play just about anything but he is at his best in what can only be called poetic music -- in this set that includes such things as the Haydn 'Variations in F' and the Liszt 'Funerailles', among others.
