This compilation is incredibly good value. Fretwork are one of the very best viol consorts and have a string of distinguished recordings behind them. The selection of Byrd and Dowland on these CDs played (and sung) with intensity and great beauty. For those looking for an introduction to the riches of Elizabethan English music you will be very happy with this compilation.

Delightful, exquisite. Some echo, but otherwise lovely sound. It took me a while to accept the countertenor sound as anything other than a good party trick. But I now love the sound as much as the output from any decent tenor, baritone, saoprano or mezzo.

There's been some criticism that Scholl might be overstylised for this material - but that is just Scholl's wonderful technique. If you want a more informal style, then try Sting's take on Dowland. Personally - I like both.

This music is, in my opinion, one of the pinnacles of western culture. In no other era was such beautiful and profound poetry set to equally masterful music. It is like Shakespeare come to musical life, and indeed Dowland was Shakespeare's contemporary and was a high figure of the Elizebethan renaissance.

For the 4 books of songs, the Consort of Musicke's 70s recordings have yet to be surpassed, nor likely will they ever be. There are many possible ways for these songs to be sung and performed, but the Consort captures them all with unerring taste, passion tempered by high dignity. The singing, particularly Emmy Kirkby's and Martyn Hill's is often radiantly beautiful, but David Thomas and John York Skinner's does not slouch either. ... Read More:

The unique, slightly hard-edged voice of the tenor Charles Daniels is ideally suited to a lute accompaniment, and his sensitive and historically well-informed approach to the songs (to which he wrote the accompanying notes) makes him the perfect choice of interpreter. His superb diction, combined with sympathetic recording, ensures that every word can be heard with absolute clarity, so the fact that the text of the songs is omitted from the sleeve notes is not a problem.

Now I must confess that if any other singer had released this recording I would have given it five stars, because it is exquisite, but nonetheless Mr Daniels can do better. His emotional expression on this recording is merely extremely good, whereas on some of his ... Read More:
