Although most Brio is not recommended for children younger than 3 years old, this set is designated as being OK from 18 months old up. We bought it for our son's second birthday, and he absolutely adores it. The pieces all seem very robust, and there is relatively limited scope for him to do much damage with the pieces if he throws a tantrum. For instance the house is made of a soft material. Learning how to run the train on and off the tracks, keep it on the track, run it through the house and use the right magnet on each carriage to connect to the others has proved to be an absorbing exercise in physical and mental dexterity. BRIO 33218 Wooden Railway System: Remote Control Express Train

I have had three of these trains. The first time the kids played with it a bit over five months and then it stopped. Replaced all batteries. Took ages to get remember to get another. That died within two weeks - replaced all batteries to no avail (and I know there are two on the front of the train). Was given a replacement from the shop and that has gone in under a week and the kids have played with it twice. This time I'm sending it back to Brio (who are very helpful). A friend has one and that has lasted 6 months on the same batteries. Unlucky? Jinxed? When it works it's great but keep the receipt!

I agree with the previous reviewer. These trains are not as well made or as durable as the ones which were made by Brio. I too am on the lookout for the few Thomas characters made by Brio we don't have.

We were so disappointed when Brio stopped making the Thomas trains. The quality with these trains is the absolute worst. We used to live in England and the Brio-made Thomas trains were far superior to the American-style Learning Curve or Flair trains. The paint chips quite easily and the trains look terrible. The track is an inferior wood too. What a shame.
