Only cosmetically different from the Mighty Red Loco but still much better than the other battery-operated engine (which came with our first starter set). That had a fiddly switch at the top whereas this has simple big buttons for forward, reverse and stop (much better for our two year old!). It even has a switch to change into push-along mode and has little trouble coping with slopes and longer trains (unlike UK rail companies my daughter likes nothing better than to load on the carriages!). Be aware you'll need two (AAA) batteries but this just makes it stronger and last longer.

A nice addition to the Brio set we'd just bought for our daughter (nearly three). She likes to wind the handle to make the bridge go up and down and likes the little gates at either side too. A nice touch is that the handle's been designed to be held and turned by small hands.

The one caveat is that you need a special piece of track from Brio to allow track to go under the bridge rather than just over it. It's difficult to find and without it, the bridge doesn't have as much appeal.
