We bought this for Lucy who is almost 5, but as the other reviewers have pointed out, it's just too hard for a small child. I can't believe that we 40+ year olds were more dexterous - I remember creating some very satisfying patterns on my own spirograph - so I can only assume that the toy's structure has been changed over the years. I don't know how durable the toy is - it's made of strong stuff, but as Lucy has only played with it for about half an hour, it hasn't been truly put the test.
