Our 2.5 year old plays with this for hours. it is solidly built and looks and sounds like a real machine. ther eis an overall 'on/off' with a little light. There's a 'fill' cycle with water sounds, a wash (with slow splinning) and a spin (with fast spinning). the spinning stops if you open the door. All of them stop after a minute or so. This stops the batteries running out fast and also keeps things generally quieter.
I thought it was worth mentioning the fact that jacks front bucket also features the smart magnet technology used in the Learning Curve Take Along Thomas toys.
This means Jack can effectively hitch up to the other toys in the range, or as my three year old discovered, pick up pennies or paper-clips with his bucket.

My (then)three and a half year old was given this doll for Christmas last year. It is one of them most worthwhile presents she has ever had - she plays with "Sarah" virtually every day in all sorts of made up scenarios. Yes, agreed with the other reviews who say the mechanism is a little noisy but that is absolutely the only down side. I think the doll has a really sweet little face and like the fact she has hair (can stand bald dolls - both my kids were born with a headful of hair, perhaps that has something to do with it!!)- in fact, I find myself covering her up if my daughter has left her lying around on a night time - yes, I know I need to get out more. My daughter has had endless hours of fun playing with this toy. I asked her what ... Read More:

This edition is a nice compact size, easy for shoving in a rucksack pocket and great for that limited hand-baggage space.
The tiles are fiddly and stick together, but that is to be expected for something so small. The tile holders work well and slide neatly into the side of the board for storage when not in use. The letters stick nicely to the board and it can be folded closed mid-game without concern that your game will be ruined.
The big let-down on this addition is that the board, when open, doesn't sit flat and it feels quite flimsy - I half expect the hinge to break each time I use it.
This is a good purchase if you are very limited on space. However, if you can afford a bit extra space, try the travel ... Read More:
