Duke Nukem

from: GT Interactive

This has to be one of my personal favourite ever first person shooters. I can remember buying ths in either 1997 or 1998 not long after I had completed the truly outstanding DOOM and was hungry for more FPS action and Duke Nukem did very nicely. It plays and looks very similar to DOOM only it is set in a futuristic Los Angeles. But what I personally really loved about Duke Nukem was it's unique and magical sense of humour that sadly I just don't see in that many video games.

From the very first level on a roof of a building and Duke says in a wonderfully deep and sincere voice DAM, THOSE ALIEN B*****DS ARE GONNA PAY FOR SHOOTING UP MY RIDE, I just knew that I was going to love this game about murderous aliens that have taken ... Read More:

Normally when you purchase a sequel, you end up with something inferior or so different that it doesn't 'feel' like the game you know and love.

Well, this game does something strange...it's very different, but GOOD different! It's more realistic than the first one (well, barring the odd yeti etc.), but just as gripping and playable.

There are more human enemies in this, and you have to really look to find the secrets, but that makes it more fun! Some of the puzzles seem too hard at first, but then you just get a greater sense of achievement when you work them out!

Please don't use a walkthrough the first time around...it's so much better to figure everything out yourself!

I always tend to panic ... Read More:

On a whim I have bought a copy of this game again - I first played it perhaps 5 years ago.
Oh my God!
Even though I am still dead against the slightly blocky graphics and colours because the PS2 is very fluid I have to admit I still find it completely enjoyable.
And scary!
To be ducking around a badly lit mansion in which you know there are very dark and macabre things - silly. But you do.
I remember feeling the first time through many years back how I had encountered Silent Hill meets Resident Evil meets Koudelka.
Still impressed, gameplay very good for both characters and each lends its own perspective to the game - replay value guaranteed.
Do you dare to be Alone in the Dark?
I'm not sure I can take much ... Read More:

Breath of Fire IV (PS)

Decent RPGs are few and far between – every gamer knows this and Capcom’s release of this game was very welcome, especially in Europe, where the Final Fantasy’s (as welcome as they are) just aren’t enough for some people’s appetites.

This one won’t be for everyone – the story is quite vast and sets itself up relatively quickly which requires the player to keep track of what is going on.

The story goes that a Princess Elena has disappeared thus requiring here sister, Nina, to go and find her. On this journey, she meets Ryu (which means dragon in Japanese), the protagonist, and they set off on their adventure (Ryu tags along because he has lost his memory). While this is happening the other main ... Read More:

Medal Of Honor

What can I say about this game, its the best! Its the original WW2 shoot'em up, its format has been copied so many times but for me no matter what title you give a war game it always comes back to this.

I just love everything about it, so many hours in my childhood were spent charging Jim Patterson around, single-handedly saving mankind from Nazi rule, OK so he's a yank you can't have it all ways (the commanding officer's British though, hazar!). Seriously though the gameplay (as with so many 'pre-next-gen' games) is brilliant and it really feels like a lot of work went into the research side of things as well as making the levels challenging but also quite fun as well. The atmosphere of this game is great too, if you've never played it before the ... Read More:

X-COM: Enemy Unknown (PSone)

from: Microprose

X-Com for any unfamiliar with the series is a turn based strategy game.

You are in charge of X-Com, the Extra Terestrial Combat Force in charge of preventing alien takeover.

The concept is that Aliens are invading Earth and you must stop them in their path before they get chance to settle. X-Com must kill or capture aliens before they settle and spread. This is done by eliminating all aliens whe they're spotted and also by using their technology against them by recovering their weaponry and technology then sending them back to your labs for analysing.

The combat side of the game starts on a Geoscape, which is a view of the World as a globe, here you choose the best place for your X-Com base. The time thing move is 1 real time seconds = 5 X-Com ... Read More:

I'm not an unfair man. I love the C&C series...well most of it anyway. The idea of commanding armies to obliterate the other is a very happy prospect. But for those of you who have played the games prior to this (C&C, C&C Red Alert...) then you know it works on the exact same principles. So your thrown into an already familiar realm and play through either Soviet or Allied campaigns.
Sure enough, poor acting shines through once again. As it does with all recorded videos in the C&C series. So kiss goodbye to replayability instantly.
The same textures are used again...as you found in existing games so it already looks boring.
But what could redeem this game from being a total mess? Well there are some good new units in it that are quite fun to play with. Namely ... Read More:

Grand Theft Auto Collectors' Edition - GTA, GTA II, GTA London

Childrens Toy Shop > Video Games > Type of Game
from: Rockstar

April 17, 2003
I went back to playing the original GTA and GTA London after completing Vice City just for a laugh to remind myself of what the originals were like. Once you get used to the ‘old Skool’ blocky graphics again you soon realise just how good these games actually were and begin to appreciate that without these there probably would not have been the groundbreaking GTA III, Vice City or forthcoming San Andreas. The game play is as totally addictive as the later titles and you could argue that the ‘top down’ birdseye view of the car chases is actually just as good as the later 3D games. It’s actually funny to think that this game caused an outcry when released due to it being too violent and yet now Vice City is winning awards from ‘respectable’ ... Read More:
