I did actually quite like this one since it is small and doesn't require an external power supply, but unfortunately the one I bought died after about three weeks. The day before it worked just fine; and the next day it didn't even show up on the listing of USB devices any more.

The drive I received was a Hitachi branded drive. Very good value for money at 500GB for around £45. The drives speed is a bit slow, Vista scores it at 5.7. But overall a good priced drive.

Once you find a CD-R that's compatible with your system, then stick with it. I've been using these regularly for a couple of years now, and find them to be reliable with my HP laptop, old Toshiba laptop and my HP desktop.

I had a batch of Maxell and Phillips blank discs, and for whatever reasons, (incompatibility with my system?)- about 70% of them would eject in the middle of burning. So for now I'm sticking with TDK, and at 20 pence per disc, I won't cry if I accidentally make a coaster!

I've only just installed this drive on my Vista PC. You will need to install the dotnet framework version 1.1 and the Service Pack 1 update to get the supplied backup software working. But that's all free from Microsoft so I can't really mark it down for that.

I have not tried out the "turbo" stuff yet - I'm inherently skeptical of badges like that. I subscribe to the theory "If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is". And besides, that's not why I bought this drive.

What I wanted was a portable drive with no external power supply and software that's easy to use. On all counts this package scores highly. And Amazon scores bonus points for undercutting the competition by over a tenner, which all adds up to ... Read More:

High quality, reliable discs. Shame about the slight pattern on them which can make it hard to write on them with a CD marker pen.

This is the 3rd generation of Deskstars (IBM and Hitachi) I've bought - they have all been outstanding, consistently top of the pile. You can see the speed comments below - the best; my 1st 1TB drive is in a near airtight external enclosure, quiet and trouble free (I'm about to buy another); easy to set-up. Over 13 years all others (Seagate, Maxtor and others) have suffered catastrophic failures in normal use. I now only buy Deskstars.

I am not an expert computer user but enjoy editing home videos prior to burning onto a DVD. This unit provides a good level of storage capacity for films (and anything else) and I found that it was really easy to set up and use. The only downside is that, because the unit comes with a very shiny finish, every fingerprint shows up.

I have also tried lots of different brands of discs, but for me, Sony discs are the best bar none. Experience skipping then this problem will disappear with Sony discs. Do not buy any other discs. £17.99 expensive (07/10/08) for 100 discs, are you having a laugh!!!

Using these discs to record video is not a good idea. When playing back the video, all i got was unknown meaning that i could not watch what i recorded. I recommend going for either the maxell or verbatim brand as i have not had any problems so far. Basically these discs are used as only frisbee's and coasters with the occasional one that works only once.
