Frugal Food

Bought this recently and a week ago tried one of the recipes- spiced chicken pilau. Just like other Delia recipes that I have tried, this did not disappoint.
Her take on frugal eating and cooking is always timely but alas, her pronouncements on freezing are out of date (see How to Cheat at Cooking for updates on freezing and how technology has made it all possible).

which does exactly what it says on its box, and is not likely to end up relegated to a dark corner of a cupboard!

Efficient in its own right, this super item became especially famous as a 'Delia Cheat Gadget!'(earning itself a removable label on both box and the item in the process) with the publication of the book - Delia's How to Cheat at Cooking and by the TV programme of the same name!
But do shop around for the best price, as the prices were a bit high for a while when it became a rarity!

Small enough to be easily stored - but do keep it in a safe place as the stainless steel blade - not surprisingly, is ULTRA sharp!

Woman's Institute Soups for All Seasons (Womens Institute)

Like the way this book is set out in seasons, and the extras ie breads etc. So far we have made six of the soups, and have enjoyed a them all. Looking forward to trying more.

Although this really is a very nice cook book from the always reliable Ainsley, it is in fact a stripped down version of the 2006 "The Feel Good Cook Book" with only 80 recipes instead of the original 150!

This wasn't made clear in the description of the book when we bought it so we feel we've been misled.

The recipes in this book are beautiful, and there are some great ideas that will inspire you to get into the kitchen.

As you can gather from the title, the book is grouped around ingredients, not grouped in the usual way i.e. Starters, Soups, Salads, Main Courses, Desserts etc. etc.

I often don't find this type of format very inspiring, but it works very well here, as the ingredients are all easy to get hold of, and the recipes are very intelligently chosen for the home cook.

For a couple of the ingredients, like Aubergines, the recipes he's chosen to illustrate them with are a bit obvious. For the vast majority though, the recipes are original and definitely ones that you will want to try out. The photos ... Read More:

Soups: Best Kept Secrets of the Women's Institute

This is a wonderful book for everyone from beginner to seasoned producer of meals. The recipes work. The instructions are clear. The ingredients are obtainable. And, most importantly they taste GREAT! I have been known as a soup dragon (producing homemade soups) for more years than I care to remember and I found lots of new ideas and good recipes to pinch and make my own.
Buy it! It's a snip!
