Inns and Cathedrals really is a superb addition to the basic Carcassonne set. It adds a lot more options for playing the game without overly complicating the rules or adding radically different elements to the game. Certainly an expansion for family play, it is a less ruthless than some of the later releases.
You have a large meeple who counts double; inn and cathedral tiles that score more points for completed roads and cities respectively, but only if they are finished before the game ends. There is also an extra set of meeples for a sixth player and tokens to denote 50 and 100 points scored.
Small additions that really add to the enjoyment of the game.
After 'Inns and Cathedrals' comes an essential expansion. There are 24 new tiles, depicting trade goods: Wine; Cloth; Grain. Players who complete cities containing trade goods icons recieve a trade goods counter. These are totalled at the end of the game for extra bonuses. Also included is the pig, which increses the farmers score when played in a field and the builder piece that allows a player to have an extra tile from the bag (which is also included). There is plenty of room in the bag for quite a few expansions (certainly for the base set, Inns and Cathedrals, Traders and Builders, Abbey and Mayor, The Tower, King). How do I know... because we play them all in our games and use the bag all the time!
I avoided this set for some time because our base set contains a built-in Rivers "upgrade". However, this expansion is intended to upgrade the basic Rivers tiles and it introduces some more interesting options at the start of the game.

The Settlers of Catan is just a fun game! The ever changing board gives a different strategy style every game. It is quite simple to pick up (although some of the photographs showing games in action can lead you believe that it's difficult). There is an aspect of planning, trading, building and a little luck (but just a little) which shows why this is a best seller. Forget Monopoly and other outdated, tedious games, this is great!
The actual game takes about an hour and a half to two hours for first time plays, but as you gain experience this is reduced. In a world that is obsessed with computer gaming, this game brings the board game back where it belongs... in the family.
I don't normally like board games, but this one is great. We have played it in various forms for about seven years now, and it's still as infuriating and addictive! And don't just waste it on the kids (though it's excellent for teaching them to be devious little strategists!) - it's brilliant for winding up all your adult friends. Just don't expect an eveningof Settlers to be a quick one.

Have owned this game for a few years and the family have not tired of it at all. It has simple rules, is great fun, quick to play and different every time. The illustrations on the game cards are lovely and it is made of very good quality board. It is a really satisfying game although can be a little frustrating at times when you are thwarted by someone elses move! I'd say it is suitable for age 6 and up and my teenagers still enjoy it (as do the parents).
Reviews are all about personal opinion, and so I'll come clean and say that I didn't really enjoy this expansion very much - but I can see why other people might.
I will assume that you already know how to play 'normal' Carcassonne. Like most expansions, this can't be played on its own. It contains 12 tiles that form the city of Carcassonne itself - these are laid out at the beginning of the game, effectively replacing the normal starting tile. This is the main reason I gave the expansion more than 1 star, as it is perfectly possible to use these tiles without the Count - they form a beautiful centrepiece to the play area, and provide a ready-made completed city to tempt you to lay down a farmer early on.
This is a real hit with our family whose age range is 5 - 75. Once rules explained no reading apart from matching place names on board to those on your ticket, max hour to play and unlike monopoly you don't know who has won until the final count up so younger players don't get disheartened half way through. Some play it strategically but our five year old won the first couple of times he played which was refreshing but there is enough of a challenge for older players to want to keep playing to improve their tactics. It is addictive.
