How to Run a Great Workshop: The Complete Guide to Designing and Running Brilliant Workshops and Meetings

by: Nikki Highmore Sims

October 26, 2006
I am about to embark on a new journey that will involve workshops and having my previous experience of running workshops I was very panicky. Would I be able to deliver the workshops? Would I know enough warm ups/ice breakers etc? And loads of other questions zipped through my mind!

Lucky for me I bought this book and once it arrived it took me 2 days to read it through. This is a book I can safely recommend to anyone needing guidance in creating workshops. Never in a million years would I have thought about using playdoh and board games as tools but this book explains why activities shouldn't just be plain powerpoint slides you can safely shake things up without losing the essence of the workshop.

I have heaps of ideas ... Read More:

Beyond Bullet Points: Using Microsoft® PowerPoint® to Create Presentations That Inform, Motivate, and Inspire: Using Microsoft Powerpoint to ... Inform, Motivate and Inspire (Bpg-Other)

Microsoft PowerPoint changed the world of presentations by simplifying the process of creating a computerized slide show. Alas, over time people started squeezing too much information into every slide and using the preinstalled generic titles. PowerPoint's simplicity let people forget the purpose of presentations: to persuade or to inform without being boring. Cliff Atkinson shows you a creative way to build a good presentation without falling into the PowerPoint template trap - tell a story instead. At present, he provides a free template, storyboard formatter and story guide at sociablemedia.com that adds value to the book, which refers to these resources repeatedly. We recommend this to anyone who gives presentations.

Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter)

by: Garr Reynolds

This book is a must read on the Topic. Some people might find it not practical but I don't agree, it's just that it makes you think on the way we've been taught to do Powerpoint presentation. And from there Garr Reynolds gives you the keys on how to prepare, design and deliver your presentation. Presentation is in our everyday life, face to face, powerpoint, meeting, selling etc... Presentation Zen is a classic in Business (read also his blog)

Brilliant Presentations: What the Best Presenters Know, Say and Do

"If you're talking about innovation and you want to explore that WOW factor, why not put a WOW card on every seat for the audience to wave whenever they feel a WOW moment" ..... ARE YOU SERIOUS? ... Who is he presenting to children or the mentally challenged or what?? Am I the only one who thinks that would be hilarious to watch? This is the sort of cringe-moment that spoils this book (and trust me there are plenty of them).
However, the book does have SOME useful information, if you can get past the pompous style of the author who seems to think that using big words to explain simple concepts makes him sound more intelligent, despite the fact the he advises clarity over complexity as a key part of good presentations.
I found this book quite annoying with ... Read More:

Logitech Cordless 2.4 GHz Presenter - Presentation remote control - radio

Logitech is a company that you have to respect, you can buy their products with folded eyes. I bought this presenter after an extensive research since I'm a technologist and for me, buying technology is the most tedious process ever. After I opened the package and inserted the batteries I plugged the USB dungle into my XP machine and it just worked with PowerPoint with zero hassle, the more exciting bit is when I plugged it into my Linux Ubuntu laptop with OpenOffice ... exactly the same, works straight out of the box. I would happily give this product 5 stars ... it looks professional, it feels professional ... simply fantastic !!!

Great when it works
but it often just freezes and refuses to advance. This has happened twice now in major national meetings.

My colleagues whipped a logitech out and outperformed this unit.
very embaressing and it had new Duracell power cell in too!

Logitech V-20 laptop speakers

June 13, 2006
I managed to pick these up for £15 in a clearance sale somewhere, what a bargain! Always go for Logitech when it comes to computer speakers and I've been wanting some for my laptop for a long time, but a tight budget led me down the dark path of lesser brands.
When I first plugged these in, the bass nearly killed me. My last laptop speakers needed the bass turned right up on the equaliser and adding that to the awesome power of the V20's, its surprising the house is still up. The volume was also a pleasant surprise, I've got my music blasting out with my computers volume on the lowest setting.
Not 100% convinced by the little buttons for changing track etc cos I have those functions on my keypad, but either way these speakers look good, sound amazing and are pretty darn solid. ... Read More:

I can't believe I'm the first person to review this book!

It's a shame that this book hasn't found a wider audience. I have seen this book positioned in book shops as a 'business' book. But it's actually a book that is appropriate for absolutely anyone who wants to know how to create more compelling messages. You could be a teacher who wants to make your lessons more memorable or a student who wants to understand what makes urban legends so virally believable.

The authors really practise what they preach. Not only do they tell you how to make your messages more 'sticky' and memorable, but they have written a book that applies their learnings. A great read - thoroughly recommended! So much so that I feel compelled to write a review - so please forgive me as this is my ... Read More:
