One reviewer gave this series just 1 * & seemed almost regretting having to do that ! Quite where that reviewers humour lies I really cannot guess. When so much that passes for "humour",either from the UK or the USA,is utter dross with shallow,vacuous & wooden characters churning out lines that could only be responded to by "canned" laughter, Black Books came like a breath of fresh air - well observed,with sharp,acidic yet truely funny script writing. I have watched this with many friends,some who work in either bookshops or record shops, & all could relate to much of the content of these shows & all found it seriously funny. In fact all of us give it 5 ***** !

Love this guy! Especially between 95 to 98, what a comedic god! It was a shame he finished his career with a whimper rather than a BANG but with material (Difinate Article, Glorious, Dressed to Kill) like this, who cares? It does make one wonder what it is about his first release 'Live at the Ambassador' that makes him want us never to see or know about it again? I have it on VHS and it knock spots of Cirle and the dreadful Sexy. Come on Eddie, release your first offering, the bit about the Dalek is a hoot!

Dylan Moran - Monster - Live

If you liked Black Books, then you will definately find this show funny. Monster is an extension of Bernard Black's character - anyone who has seen behind-the-scenes photos and videos knows Dylan Moran is not entirely the miserable, grumpy, cynical man he portrays in this show, but that's what's so funny.

His comedy is odd and original, I honestly can't compare him adequately to anyone else. I would definatley recommend this DVD, and personally I would love to see more of his work. He is my favourite comedian by far.

Dara O'Briain - Live [2006]

In short, one of the finest comedy performances available right now. O'Briain is a very intelligent man (he did Physics and Maths at University) and it really comes through in the act.

The performance begins with a half-hour of banter with the front row; thankfully the audience members he picks on are interesting! The rest of the performance also calls on the audience occasionally, which gives the act a relaxed, unscripted, friendly air.

I can't wait for his new DVD!

I read somne of the more negative views and I wondered if I had signed on to review a different DVD, please have no fears, this is brilliant. One for putting yer feet up with a cup of your favourite drink, a bar of choccy, and just chuckle for an hour and a half. Its relaxing because he is so natural onstage, but it left me with a real chilled out happy feeling when it sadly had to end. Buy this, you wont be disappointed I promise.

I always judge comedy on it's ability to make me laugh aloud when I am on my own, and let me tell Ross Noble is the master of this feat. If you have never seen a performance by Ross then please make it one of your lifes goals. This man is utter genius and he doesn't have to try. His improvisation skills are just incredible and although the DVD's will never be as good as seeing him perform live you can't get much better comedy to sit at home and giggle at. Plus you'll be watching the extras for the rest of your life cos there is so much packed into these 4 discs to make your £14.99 literally the best money you have ever spent.

I miised this when it was originally on. I don't know how or why as it screams for watching by anyone that's ever been a gleefully geeky type into the sci-fi/fantasy genres that this often references.

The series is excellent. Nothing lets it down. The characters are well realised, the dialogue is spot on, the humour can be a mix of subtle references, situational funnies, and glorious explosions of banter.

This DVD set is also a winner. Like with the Shain of the Dead/Hot Fuzz DvD's, they show a love of the medium. There's options and options, all wrapped up in evocative UI's. This also has an idle mode that is worth letting run a while too.

Alan Davies - Urban Trauma [1998]

Some of the jokes are a little dated (the one about the gay pilots confused me; how is that bit funny?), but mostly the routine stands up to scrutiny. The sequence about the cats is one of the funniest in stand-up.

I'm not a connoisseur, but I don't think Davies' delivery is very good. I think he's much better in panel shows, e.g. his continued spot on QI, than live stand-up. His jokes are, while very well-written, quite evidently well-rehearsed and edited before the show (although his delivery is MUCH better than the robotic parrotings of Jimmy Carr).

I'd say if you're a fan of Alan Davies or interested in 90s Comedy, give it a shot.

Ross Noble - Fizzy Logic

Ross Noble is probably the funniest comedian of the decade. This DVD is yet another hilarious trip through Ross' crazy mind. Filmed at the Canberra Theatre in Australia's capital this is Noble at his best. If you are watching him for the first time, please bear in mind that his are not the most linear of shows and there are many tangents. But the brilliant thing about Ross is that he will get around to what he has to say in the end, and we should just sit back and enjoy the journey.

One of the wonderful things about his comedy is that much of it is improvised and based on what people in the crowd say. Therefore each show is different, even on the same tour.

I thoroughly recommend this DVD and his others, and go and see him live!! You won't regret ... Read More:
