I knew I had reached the cool part of adulthood when I purchased my first pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers. My Dad wore these back in 1955. Frank Sinatra wore them. Jack Kennedy wore them. Sean Connery had a pair in Dr. No. Like James Bond, they introduce themselves suavely and without fanfare. Jack Kerouac wore them. He borrowed Neal Cassady's and never returned them. The Blues Brothers wore them. In old photographs, every Brooklyn Dodger is sporting a pair. The Men in Black wore the wraparound style. They were invented for fighter pilots in World War II by Bausch & Lomb. Muhammad Ali Jinnah of Pakistan and Sheik Mujibur Rahman of Bangladesh both wore them. Corey Hart wore them at night. MY DAD wore them.

The result was a renewal of the line, with a significant pick-up in quality. The pair I recently purchased is the equal - or better - of the pair I purchased decades ago. Wayfarers have superb, distortion-free lenses, bulletproof hinges, and the plastic frame will hold up through years of regular use.

Be careful when purchasing Wayfarers. There are a lot of style and size variations in the line, and there are a lot of off-brand knockoffs and fakes, too. These are real, and the original style that people have in mind when talking about Wayfarers.
