The author spent a considerable number of years living in an isolated small South Dakota home, and began frequenting monasteries for intellectual stimulation - hardly a good foundation for a vigorous intellectual life. Much stronger alternatives included moving to a larger city or becoming employed as a high-school or junior college instructor, heavy use of the Internet (reading respected sources such as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, and posting her own thoughts), and use of satellite TV.

I bought this book at the airport this weekend after scanning over the first couple of pages. I will admit I was laughing and entertained for the first 10 pages or so. The sexual humor was right up my alley. I'm somewhat of a sexist, somewhat immature for my age (25) and like to party. I've partied everywhere, with all kinds of people and I am a living legend in many cities and social groups across the country.
However, being a drunk is one thing, but Tucker is a mean drunk. Tucker is "that guy" that is obnoxious, offensive and should be avoided when you see him out. He has a good sense of humor, to an extent, however, his lack of disrespect for women and those in authority was too much for me. He gives spoiled white boys ... Read More:

This book held my attention from beginning to end. Reading this book does not mean you hate anyone, unlike those who try to stop you from reading about Aisha, or anything else.

Strunk's work is a solid baseline for grammar, punctuation, and composition. If your workplace tends to create its own standards for linguistics, it might be valuable to keep this readily available.
It is somewhat limited in terms of all the possible usages of punctuation, and admits as much in its first pages. While this is a valuable reference for most scenarios, it can't stand alone.

Marshall Goldsmith illustrates the concept of focusing the mind on positive ways of thinking. He has provided "20 annoying habits". He has written how they need to be "eliminated"; until your thoughts have been clearly defined. As a reader, I can relate to most of these habits and I have a clear understanding to say "Thank you" when it needs to be said. Highly Recommended to Corporations, Small Businesses, and future students.

The program Dr. Karp presents in this book was a lifesaver during the first three months of my daughter's life. We didn't follow his plan down to the letter (and Dr. Karp says it is adaptable for each baby's needs) because my daughter hated having her arms swaddled in, so we swaddled her arms-out and it worked like a charm. She started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks, and the four "S's" worked incredibly well when she needed help calming down. I really appreciated the fact that this plan helped us help her adjust to the world during her "fourth trimester" in a loving and comfortable way. People now tell me that they have never seen a happier, more content child than my little girl!

At first glance I was disappointed with this book because I opened it up and saw a bunch of pretty photos. I thought I had bought a picture book with no real value of teaching me how to take great photographs.
Since I had it I decided to read it. I have learned so much! If you read the text and then read the description in the photos you can learn so much on fine tuning your photography.
I consider myself a novice photographer who, admittedly, takes more photos of the family than anything else. Nonetheless, my pictures have improved immensely under the suggestions of Bryan Peterson. I've even gotten creative and tried nature shots.
Don't underestimate this book like I suspect many have with a quick flip of the pages. It has ... Read More:

There are few books that keep me up at night. The Heretic's Daughter, by first-time novelist Kathleen Kent, was one of them. With none of the insecurity sometimes displayed by new authors who are unsure how to carry a long narrative, Kent effortlessly weaves the tale of a woman, Martha Carrier, and the fate suffered by her family during the Salem Witch Trials in 17th century Massachusetts.
Told from the perspective of Martha's 10-year-old daughter, Sarah, the story is not about magic or spells, but is instead about one woman's courageous stand against tyranny, suspicion, and superstition in a time when such beliefs were considered an integral part of everyday life.
I found that over the course of reading this book I didn't want to finish it. Not ... Read More:

I still buy and read the Guinness Record book every year, because it's become like an old friend that I like to catch up with, but I have to disagree with Birch East. I like the way it has changed and brings out a fresh look each year. The changes, like holograms, 3D whatever, make it fresh every year. My nephews also are big fans of the 3D gimmick.
I do agree with the recommendation for Getting into Guinness: One Man's Longest, Fastest, Highest Journey Inside the Most Famous Record Book, the new book by Larry Olmsted about the history and culture of the Guinness World Records book. After reading his review I snapped up a copy and it is great--very entertaining and a fun read! I have read the record book for years but never stopped to wonder where it came from (Guinness Beer!), ... Read More:
