I read this book right before a trip to Australia, finished on the first leg of the flight. The whole time traveling around the country (great place by the way), I found myself seeing and hearing things right off the pages. My wife got so tired of listening to my chuckle and me trying to explain what was so funny that she read it on a train trip we did in our second week of the trip. If you've got a trip to Oz in your future, get the usual travel guides but also get this book.

I've been a loyal reader of Waiter's blog for a long time now, and I'm a real fan of his work. As such, I was excited to read the book, and to contribute to someone who I feel has been producing really excellent content for years.

That said, I was honestly disappointing. The book seemed to contain a lot more stories and confessions more suited for a therapist than readers. Sure, I care about this man, but I was hoping for entertainment and the occasional thought-provoking anecdote, the sort of thing I read on his blog. Instead, the book seems to be filled with soul-barring confessions and introspection.

By now, most everyone who wishes to read this book knows many of the details. But to me, there are two extraordinary things that have become obvious about Dame Julie. First, she writes this book much like she speaks. It's as if she were reading it to me in her own special style. Refined, and with a well developed grasp of the English language. And yet, she has had virtually little, if any, formal education. Her mother put a halt to her tutoring by the age of 14, and she may have received an education that is barely the equivalent of junior high school! How did she manage that? I love this tool. I bought it to help me out with my music theory homework. This tool helps save so much time. I can now do transposition homework assignments in 1/2 the time it used to take me. This tool is to music what a calculator is to math. My only regret is that I do not have this tool for the minor keys, and if it does exsist, i cannot find it. The music theory guide inside is basic, but very easy to understand. The text is well written and easy to read in a short period of time. I HIGHLY recomend this book.

I really enjoy this kind of narrative style, but there are just too many unlikely situations to make the protagonist(s) jump from one situation to another completely different, and this happens far too much. The ending is written as if the book should fit a fixed number of pages: the chapters get shorter and their points more random and unconnected. Fertility's ability is used in trivial ways except once (which is brilliant), especially at the end, which seems to be used just to end the book, despite how unlikely it is. In short: the book let me down after having read the Fight Club.
