The life and death of wealthy philanthropist Brooke Astor and the ultimate showdown between her son and grandsons make for compulsive reading in this well-researched book. Astor was an interesting woman, well loved by millions and liberally generous with her money. On the other hand, she was cool and stingy about sharing it with her family. Her only son, Tony Marshall, now in his 80s, is set to stand trial in 2009 for elder abuse and making changes to her will after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. So the ending of this debacle is yet to come. After reading this book, the actions of Marshall and his wife certainly come across as corrupt and circumspect but since they didn't talk to the author as much as those on the other side, ... Mr. Sedaris little book of Christmas jeer is perfect for anyone with a quirky, sarcastic sense of humor. This is not a heart-warming compilation, but still a very funny perspective on the less holy aspects of this popular season. It would be quite the stretch in saying that some of these stories are applicable to Christmas. Mr. Sedaris also takes tangential potshots at Easter and Halloween. Though his piece about observing pathologists working in a morgue is entertaining, I failed to see its relation to any holiday theme. A quick, silly, caustic and enlightening read. But please be warned, this book will not fill you with the stereotypical holiday spirit unless you just so happen to be Ebenezer Scrooge before the ghostly visits.

This book is more than an amazing story of overcoming challenge for a young boy with so many problems as he finds his wonderous voice through a genus for music. More it is a story that will impact each and every person who reads it, Whether in response to this amazing true account of triumph and miracles, or tapping in to some place in us that thinks we "can't".
A great gift for anyone you love.
That may be gibberish to some, but to me, it was the dewey-decimal system location of the Peanuts strips in my Elementary school library. I really gained my love of Peanuts from those library-bound books, but always remembered coming back to 'The Peanuts Jubilee,' which was (at the time) the only way to find insight into the earlier strips. With Fantagraphic Books, we've been able to see what many of those early years were like. With the latest volume, we've moved into familiar territory with some of the more familiar characters and stories.
In this volume, a number of revelations come about:
-Lucy goes to extreme measures and throws Schroeder's piano to the kite-eating tree.

I never get bored of reading all of the little quips and stories that appear in Uncle John's Readers....Makes you say 'Really?'. None of them boring, all of them surprising and fun to read. Nothing very long in the readers they are all fairly short features in each book. Easy to pick up and read just a tad, then put it down until you can read it again. Stories are not in specific order, so you can skip all around, pick and choose...it all still makes sense and is good fun.
I doubt there is anyone who can find bad things to say about a fun book like this.

I had to force myself to finish this book becase i had hope that I would find something more entertaining. I finished it and ive never been more dissapointed although it did make me wanna say: "I was told there'd be cake"

I love that the writers of Mental Floss can take something as boring as World History can be (sorry history buffs) and make it interesting and humorous. This book would be great for anyone from history buffs to people looking for a good interesting and humorous read.

Great book. Focuses on the origins of their songs as well as the people who influenced them. Fantastic insight into the personal lives and minds. Relates what was happening in their lives and careers with how they expressed themselves in their music. Don't expect to hear much about controversial double intendres, etc. This book is based upon fact and states when conjecture is used. Much of it bears truth when compared to works written by people who spent a lot of time with them (e.g., Hunter Davies). You'll get a feel for how creative Lennon and McCartney really were, how they complimented each other psychologically and musically, and what destroyed Lennon's creativity and band leadership. A must have for any serious student of the greatest pop band in history. ... Read More:
