More "Oliver Twist" than "The Wizard of Oz" this book is not for the faint of heart. McCourt's autobiography "Angela's Ashes" had a Hollywood ending with the young immigrant (McCourt) arriving in New York to start a new life. It left readers with such high hopes. His second book "Tis" lacks the childhood innoncence of his first. In fact, the book is both tedious and somber but I still enjoyed it immensely. What ruined the book is that we know too much about McCourt's success and too little about his journey. He is brutally honest about his New York life - alcoholism, divorce, his mixed feelings about his mother, his lackluster career - and the book at times is a rambling alcoholic. But that's what makes it unique. The book is like the man; brilliant ... Read More:

Putting myself in the place of a customer, I felt strong resistance to Ziglar's closing techniques. His closing techniques seemed offensive to me, especially when ending his closing questions with "wouldn't you?" My feeling was almost always, "Well, maybe I would or I wouldn't, but I have to reflect on it. Truth isn't always so black and white. Stop treating me like I'm a checker on a checkerboard, as if you know the big picture, and I don't. You don't know what I think or feel."
When he gives examples of trying to sell cookware, I was thinking, "I could buy cookware at Goodwill that will work just fine for a few bucks, and you know it, and you aren't saying it. Why don't you take your closing technique of figuring out how much your cookware ... Read More:

I don't have a huge estate, and thought this would work for me. I am shocked to see that SENSITIVE INFORMATION, your SS number, account numbers, date of birth, address, EVERYTHING, is stored on some server somewhere in cyberspace! Hackers would find this server a TOTAL GOLDMINE!! I selected the option not to save my data to the server, but to export it to my own computer, and import it next time I used the software. After filling in a good deal of sensitive information, I found no option to save it, and ended up exiting and losing it all. Throughout the use of this software, I had to click on a disclaimer, and warned to have a lawyer look at the documents it produces to be SURE they are complete, etc. I looked on the CD for "help" files, and found that the entire ... At the outset, I have to say that as a retired attorney, I am one of the biggest fans of Nolo books in virtually every topic of the law offered by their expert authors. Nolo is truly the best publisher of books written by lawyers with vast knowledge in their areas of expertise; but also understand how to distill the most complicated information as terrific writers in order to assist readers from all backgrounds. That said, in large part the huge volume of content in this 15th edition is helpful along with the actual legal forms one will need to even start the process whether the reader decides to retain a bankruptcy attorney or not. The problem, however, is that most readers may not understand the full import of what is described in the book as best summarized on page 9 as part ... Read More:

When the Social Contract was published in 1762, Rousseau became a wanted man in France and Switzerland, but in 1794 after the French revolution, his remains were buried in Paris as an international hero.
In 1814, religious fundamentalists stole the remains of Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau and dumped them in a pit full of quicklime, a cruel burial reserved for individuals condemned by the church.
In the Social Contract, Rousseau postulates that a legitimate political authority in a civil society comes only from a social contract intended for their mutual preservation and agreed upon by all citizens (the sovereign). The sovereign that expresses the general will that aims at the common good has absolute authority over public matters. The state that is protecting ... Read More:

Review of "Day of Reckoning: How Hubris, Ideology, and Greed Are Tearing America Apart."
America is coming apart at the seams. Forces foreign and domestic seek an end to U.S. sovereignty and independence. Before us looms the prospect of an America breaking up along the lines of race, ethnicity, class and culture. In Day of Reckoning, Pat Buchanan reveals the true existential crisis of the nation and shows how President Bush's post-9/11 conversion to an ideology of "democratism" led us to the precipice of strategic disaster abroad and savage division at home.
Ideology, writes Buchanan, is a Golden Calf, a false god, a secular religion that seeks vainly, like Marxism, to create a paradise on earth.
While free enterprise is good, the worship of a "free trade" ... Read More:

The author was my history professor. Simon Baatz is a much better lecturer than a writer. His lectures were so interesting on topics of crime. This book is okay borderline boring. I read better books (even on this case). I think he should have gave the book some feeling vs. being so dry and detail oriented only.
I only read this book because he was my professor. If he wasn't I doubt I would have read it.
