I got this book for my brother and looked through it before giving it to him. It's a large format, and the pictures are great. The information int he book is probably not as in-depth as would be a book less focused on the photographs, but for anyone who just wants to see the beautiful images, this is a perfect book.

This anthology, edited by Jerome Groopman, is exactly what one would hope for - a wide-ranging collection of well-written, fascinating articles which will expand the reader's horizons and are fun to read. Groopman's anthology benefits from his having cast a very broad net, as well as from the depth of his intellectual curiosity. In his introduction, he outlines his criteria for inclusion:
"the articles ... have novel and surprising arguments, protagonists who articulate their themes in clear, cogent voices, and vivid cinema. They are not verbose or tangential. They are filled with simple declarative sentences. ... I suspect none of the articles was easy to write. Each shows a depth of thought and reporting that takes time and considerable ... Read More:

If you are looking for a book with a lot pictures then this is your book. The pictures are wonderful and give you a great idea of fairy houses you can build with your children. However, there is nothing to read and my daughter was just a tad bit disappointed because she loves to read. But this is still a great book and she still loves it. I would definately buy it again. In fact I am buying her other fairy book as well.

Every year I buy the Greenpeace calendars and I use them as per Christmas present. I use it by agenda and the pictures are fantastics! (sorry for my english...)

I loved this book and stayed up nights under the desert stars reading Abbey's writting that brought the desert to life. His appreciation for the wilderness fueled by the reflection of civilization gives the narrative depth. His rants of gapers and the great industry of being civilized are often humerous but sometimes turn mean. This book made me laught, cry, think, and act. A great book to take along for a road trip if you plan to get lost and leave the car at the end of the road to see where your feet take you.

That's not entirely fair, but...this is a book of essays, not a natural history or gardening book. It is about Pollan's perceptions of nature and landscape, through the gateway of his garden. He does only enough research to flesh out his musings with historical fact and literary reference - and he is very selective. He leans heavily on Thoreau, and neglects wider scholarship. His essays bog down in pedantic and turgid language (he abuses at least one 5-syllable word per essay). The writing is much like Bill Bryson's, about whom, I'm also kinda lukewarm. I didn't love it, although there are good bits - the story of his first rose plantings was interesting, and inspired me to drop a few snobby old roses in the sod.

A little over twenty-five years ago William Trogden, who took the name of his Native American ancestors and called himself William Least Heat Moon, set out on a journey across America in what was basically the ancestor of the modern SUV, a small truck which he named Ghost Dancing.
Initially he did this because he had lost his job and his wife in the space of a month, but his journey turned into much more than just an attempt to forget. It became a classic search for and journey into the heart of the country.
This is not a trip into the weirdness of America, although Least Heat Moon encounters plenty of strange sites and people on his journey. It is more of a trip into the heart and soul of the country - figuratively as well as literally. There have ... Read More:

The lesson that gets taught over and over again without being "learned" very well is the effects of "unintended consequences". This book includes examples of that. Rachel Carson was correct about DDT, however the overzealous implementation of her ideas has led to the hardship of millions wherever malaria is endemic. One should not be gleeful that some of the global warming hyperbole is poked in this book, because there are important nuggets of truth within the PRO environmentalist views. Sometimes I see pollution issues being mixed with climate change causes. The one is an important stewardship issue for humans, the other is based upon a world-view that says people operate the universe.
The value of this book is that regardless of your postition on the topics included, ... Read More:
