Once they saw this map, everyone on the birding trip to Costa Rica were disappointed in the maps that they brought along. More than once I heard, "This is a great map. Where did you get it?"

I am a fan of Bill Bryson. I simply loved his Short History of Nearly Everything and In a Sunburned Country. Just awesome stuff. Reread both several times. I liked several other of his travel books, as well.

But this...this is just...bad. I mean seriously bad. He makes fun of darned near everything from his youth from his family on, and not in a funny, teasing, but affectionate way like Gene Shepherd had the sense and talent to do, but in a really nasty and distateful way. And it's just not funny. Nasty satire can be a guilty pleasure...like the old National Lampoon magazine managed from time to time (remember the Teddy Kennedy Volkswagon ad?), but this stuff is just...bad and boring.

I guess Mr. Bryson is just not ... Read More:

Speak Italian: The Fine Art of the Gesture

I bought this book because I thought I'd learn something new . The pictures are nice enough, & it being in both Italian & English (although not always precisely translated) is neat.
But most of the gestures are universal, not unique to Italy (the international signal for "check please" or "to read") which was a little dissapointing. The more Italian gestures are not well explained in terms of context, but are entertaining enough.
If I were to do it over again, I might buy the book but only for under $9

As a book-lover, you probably have a favorite that you read a couple of times a year. It sits there in your bookcase, and as you pass by you glance at it and smile, thinking of how much it's meant to you. And one day as you notice it, you say to yourself, "It's time I read this again!"

And so you do, visiting this old dear friend. You see aspects of its personality you hadn't fully noticed in previous readings, concepts that had escaped you before.

"Travels," by Michael Crichton, is my old dear friend.

Crichton was the author of "Jurassic Park," "The Andromeda Strain" and so many other books; and was the creator of the TV show "ER."

But did you know when he was a medical student at ... Read More:

I'm not much of a traveller, but this book is one of the most delightful romps I've ever been on. Bryson is not only a very funny guy, he has a keen eye for detail, especially the traits that make us all human in our own particular, regional way. I've already started another Bryson book.

I have to read this for a lame LBST class, but I'm trying to make the best of it. As far as I can tell, it is pretty well written, it's just a shame that I don't care. My teacher, however, gives it rave reviews. If you're just looking for something to read that's interesting. Search Dean Koonz or Greg Hurwitz. Unless you are actually into anthropology, then this book might be for you. And why I spent this much time reviewing a book I don't even care about...well...I guess I don't know. Hahaha

I've just re-read this after 10 years. Sometimes the lens of nostalgia distorts memory so as to make a good book great.

Not the case here. Homicide is still the best account of urban America in decay; and the best 'police procedural' I have ever read, by such a wide margin as to render most comparisons meaningless.

If you have enough interest to read the reviews, then you absolutely must read this book.

Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War

If you've ever wondered why the South can't just get over the whole Civil War thing, this book explains--without being unduly sympathetic. It is also good for more than a few belly laughs--particularly if you are Southern, but even if you are not.

Horowitz is a Northern Jew by birth, whose immigrant European Jewish grandfather was fascinated by the Civil War--a fascination which he explains in a very logical and compelling way.

Similarly, he also explains the very real-life people whom he encounters on his tour of Southern Civil War battlefields in an equally logical and compelling way. I grew up in SC--he didn't--and I think he got it right, both the charming eccentricities ... Read More:

I bought this book in the eighties and found it helpful on some road trips. This newer version has little more. Some of these restaurants are no longer good and there are far better ones in an area. The concept is good, but I don't think the Sterns go back to these places to reevaluate and quite frankly I don't think they have added much that's new.
