Michael Crichton knows how to write a suspenseful book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. But the reader normally expects that the plot will make some sort of sense at the end. A few well-drawn characters would also be a plus. Here the villain is investing billions of dollars in a technology for travel to alternate universes, which just happen to be replaying our past (why this would be so is never explained). Although these are defined as "alternate" universes, somehow someone in that universe is able to leave a message for us in the present at an archaeological site(again, not explained). I purchased this book last year before our 4 week trip to France. This book is interesting and informative. I especially liked the travel tips and recommendations for accomodations outside of Paris. The two places that we enjoyed staying the most I found in this book. Definitely check out this book!

When I was a kid, I used to read lot of Jules Verne. In those days I couldn't read neither English, nor French so I was destined to use translations which were few and of varying quality. Nevertheless, I think I'll always remember captain Nemo and his mysterious ship, his exile on the island and his death. Stories of Jules Verne always stirred my fantasy, and I guess that he should be blamed, together with Poe and Tolkien, for me entering the world of SF&F and staying there for a long time.
Today, I'm much more cynical, writer of literary criticism in my own language, somewhat versed in few branches of Theory, result of which is, however paradoxical that may sound, growing inability to read and enjoy books from my childhood memory. Only thing that ... Read More:

This is much more than Taber's account of the actual historic French/California taste-off. It is really an indepth look at the beginnings of the post-Prohibition California wine industry, especially the quality winemakers who were trying to do much more than provide good jug wines. There are wonderful family histories, anecdotes, analysis of wine marketing, and much more.

If you have only seen the film "Bottle Shock," you should read this book to see what really happened. It's a fun film but more fictional than factual.

Well, almost everything...this shows a beginner everything he needs to know about astronomy, from equipment to nebulae to satellites, however, it doesn't show you how to find anything in the sky. the book has some beautiful charts of the milky way in the back but no indication of how to use them or what are the good targets. a few pages describing what targets to search for and how to find them would be very useful to a beginner. "left turn at Orion" would be a good choice for something like that.

It does a fantastic job informing you about everything you need to know about telescopes which i think is the hardest part to getting into star gazing. i just wanted to get a telescope and look in it and nothing else, but i soon realized that you must ... Read More:

American Pie: My Search for the Perfect Pizza

This is a very good book and author does a very good job with dough description. However, I find two problems with this book.

As a person who really likes to cook I need to know things like the size of eggplants in his recipes. Why does he not indicate the sizes and types. We have many types, but there are two major ones. A large American ones and slender Asian/Japanese ones. Without that information, it's hard to make some of the toppings for puree and such. He talks very sweetly about his wife Susan roasting a bushel of eggplants for later puree. That is great, but what type of eggplants is she roasting? This is just one example. I had to stop from making eggplant puree because it was missing _that_ information.

This is the essential tour guide for traveling in Europe. Rick Steves' approach is to meld into the local cultures and really get to know the different cultures. He advocates avoiding the touristy sites that are geared to Americans because they cost more and offer less opportunity to really get into the local culture. He takes you to where the Europeans vacation and eat. He lists the hostels and inexpensive hotels that provide fewer creature comforts but bring you into contact with travelers from nay countries as well as the locals. He tells you right up front that his tours are for those seeking more of an adventure than a comfortable trip.
