Startling, exciting, and quite original, are the very words to describe Janine Jansen's unique, quite insightful, interpretation of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons". While there are many fine recordings of this work, with the best of the relatively recent crop include Mutter's and Chang's, Jansen's recording deserves ample praise simply for its bold, daring performance of Vivaldi's concerti cycle. Why? Hers is quite literally a stripped-down interpretation, consisting of herself, five other strings (two violins, viola, cello and double bass), theorbo and box organ/harpsichord. The conductor and the singers can make a beautiful song the opera that everyone jeers and hates. To have a Russian singer doing o mio babbino caro is just plain silly...give the woman a break and play something from Russian opera...give a beautiful melodic aria to a lyrical singer like Caballe...boo hiss. Try Opera's Greatest Moments where they give Hvorostvsky an aria from Pique Dame and leave the bel canto to bel canto singers.

Many years ago I heard a performance of Van Cliburn playing Rachmaninov's third piano concero live from Moscow in 1958 on WQXR. I greatly admired his live performance from Carnegie Hall recorded in 1958 and issued on RCA, but this peformance was slightly different, seemingly more relaxed. I was able to tape a portion of it at that time and heard it again in its entirety online several years ago. This is that performance, readily available for the first time. The video is reasonably clear, as is the audio; however, the video and audio are frequently out of sync, which is particularly annoying during the first movement cadenza.

The encores are enjoyable-I particularly enjoyed the reaction of the musicians in the Moscow Philharmonic. The Rachmaninov ... Read More:

The classical music is, of course, 5 stars. I enjoy the Seraphim price range for educational music CDs. Seraphim never has the greatest fidelity with their CDs, however; but it is definately worth buying.

Vaughan Williams: The Nine Symphonies

It's safe to say that Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of the finest British composers alongside Holst, Elgar, Britten, and Bax. His nine symphonies are pure proof of his genius: they're lovely, haunting, lyrical, intense, hot-blooded, ethereal, etc. Maestro Andre Previn leads the London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus with perfect control; no one misses a step. Sound quality is first-rate, and booklet is quite informative. This box set gets an A from me.

This, one of the greatest operas of the twentieth century which, because of its language and setting, is not performed as often as it should be receives a magnificent performance here: the production, singing, and orchestral performance are all superb. A must for all lovers of Janacek and of twentieth-century opera. More than just a supplement to the definitive Mackerras CD recording of the work. Most enthusiastically recommended!
