As someone who had prejudged this movie, I was more than pleasantly surprised. Having watched the TV clip,I thought it would be a movie that was contrived to make these two actors look good. With what I thought would be expected laughs with little substance. Boy was I wrong!
To my surprise, it was the good Zen, lack of Zen cop, done with great humor, fun, sentiment and as in life, a surprise at its end:)

This was a truly enjoyable movie. Jessica Tandy is a gem (as always) and Morgan Freeman was also delightful in this role. Though he lays it on a bit thick at times with the overacting, it is only a minor distraction from the story. American Jews played a crucial supporting role in the Civil Rights Movement, it is refreshing to see this part of the struggle referenced in a Hollywood production.

After I read this book by Dennis Lehane, I went out and rented the movie. I wanted to see how the director portrayed some of the more interesting side characters in the plot. Cheese Olman for one. The book was full of Dennis Lehane's complex portrayals of interesting characters, and the quality of the plot twists were in line with other Dennis Lehane books, such as Mystic River. THAT movie, by the way, was a great adaptation of a great Lehane book.
I was appalled. The characters were so altered that I had no ability to compare these portrayals between the book and the movie. All characters became stereotypes reflecting today's typical scripts. I hope Dennis Lehane had no part in creating the script for this movie - it was dull, shallow, ... Read More:

Bruce Willis is great as the assassin, and Josh Hartnett is pretty good as the main character, though he looks a lot like Ashton Kucher to me. Lucy Liu got on my nerves as a little too chirpy. Morgan Freeman and Sir Ben Kingsley are somewhat wasted on the material, which is a revenge plot fantasy adventure. The cutting is little too frenetic at times. But at least the plot makes sense. As Hollywood hokum, not too bad, really.

These are two of the most enjoyable and funny movies I have ever watched. Who needs "special effects" when you have this level of writing, acting and humor? These are movies to be laughed at time and again. "...what kind of jail is this, no bars on the windows or doors?" "Well, we are just getting started." What a couple of great movies. James Garner is at his finest!

This version had many scenes that were deleted from the original film. My son is a huge movie buff and he really enjoyed the bonus features disc.

Every time I watch `The Shawshank Redemption' my first thought upon its closing is `how in the world did this lose the Best Picture Oscar to `Forrest Gump'?'. In all honesty there really is no comparison when you look at the two films. One is a generic feel good film wrapped in saccharine clichés and the other, this one, is a magnificent character study that slowly yet poignantly captures the very essence of life.
No comparison.
`The Shawshank Redemption' begins with banker Andy Dufresne being wrongfully accused of murdering his wife and her lover. He is sentenced to two life sentences (due to his cold demeanor) to be served at Shawshank correctional institution. He is immediately pegged as a weakling, not build for survival within the prison ... Read More:
