Just a little over 3 weeks old and it died. Seagate's poor overseas tech support, of no help, they offer to send a `refurbished' drive (a used one) to replace what I purchased NEW. Called Seagate Corporate, no help, selecting numbers to more automated script recorded voices. No option to get to a real person or a operator. Good bye Seagate, poor service, poor drive. Save you money. Run from this company.

I have always had good luck with Seagate drives but the Freeagent series uses a unique usb cable that makes it essential that you keep the cable 'glued' to the drive lest you get it mixed with your other cables. Neither the power supply nor the cable has any markings to indicate they are Seagate and therefore, while I can pull out any usb cable to connect any of my other usb drives, this is not the case with this line of Seagate drives. Why they would design a product to use a non standard cable and then make replacing that cable almost impossible is beyond me. Installed this to replace a smaller hard drive for storing video data. Have had no issues, as other have stated, with playing any of these. They are anywhere from less than a meg to full length movies. They are in a variety of formats: AVI, WMV, MPG, ASF and DAT files. Also most music files too. Very pleased with the increased storage size and plan to start replacing other smaller drives now.

As noted in other reviews this is a bare drive, wrapped only in a thin plastic anti-static bag. In stark contrast to every other hard drive that I have ordered over the Internet, Amazon provides almost no protective packaging for the drive in shipment.

When I opened the package from Amazon, tossed on my front porch by the UPS driver, I noticed a few air-packs on top of the drive and ABSOLUTELY NO PROTECTION BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVE AND THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX. In other words, the bare drive was placed in the box, a few air-packs were placed on top, and the package was shipped.

It is worth adding that Seagate will void the drive's 5-year warranty if "the drive experiences shock in excess of 350 Gs." How much is 350Gs? I am ... Read More:

Seagate ST310005FDA1E1-RK Freeagent Desktop 1 TB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

I bought this drive because of its warrenty and I have 3 other Seagate drives. This drive works great when it is working. However it will not recover from sleep. I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to restart. I returned the drive and the replacement does the same thing.

The Seagate Freeagent Pro 1TB unit was delivered before expected and performs as advertised using Firewire in a 3 unit daisy chain configuration. I use it exclusively as a backup disk for HD video and RAW format digital pictures (25,000+). These type of files take alot of space so 1TB may not last too long. The backup software that comes with the unit, Memeo AutoBackup, performs perfectly for the described configuration. The backup software is configured to automatically backup multiple locations where it automatically moves a copy when new files are added or a change is made to an existing file. I bought this HD for my iMac. I am a little disappointed. It was easy enough to setup and partition but, it fails 90% of the time when using "Time Machine". I have to manually back up. I called Seagate and they said they do not support their products when partitioned for PC and Mac and that this was the reason for the failure. However, I had the same issue before adding the PC partition. Do you homework before buying this item, I think there are much better drives out there for the money.

I've had this drive for just a short time, but I know Seagate is a hard drive manufacturer with many years of top notch experience. This drive is much smaller, lighter, slimmer and better looking than most external drives. It is no heavier, larger or fatter than a small pocket planner, and it's brushed metal matches my laptop exactly (black, blue and red also available). The lights indicating power and operation are very similar to the lighted Apple logo on MacBooks. The bottom surface of the drive is a cool slightly rubberized texture that keeps it from slipping around on your desk, but doesn't keep it from sliding easily in and out of pockets. The only thing I wish it had, that some other portable drives have, is drop protection.
