Pretty good detection overall. The only issue I have with it, is I wish it was louder. I can't seem to hear it a lot of times over my music or if my windows are down. Other than that it picks up radar quite nicely, I thought it was going haywire one day while in town, only to find out it was picking up the radar from the auto-enforced street light.

I too bought the unit based on the vendors reputation. It is small and powered my Dell D600 laptop without a problem using the battery adapter, but it got pleasantly warm. But there were some issues.

1. You must press a button to power it on and the small blue LED is very hard to see. If the power is interrupted, you've got to press the button to turn it on again. I'd prefer a slide or rocker switch for always on if powered.

2. The cigarette adapter didn't stay securely plugged into either receptacle on my Dodge 2500 truck. The slightest touch interrupted power and the unit shut off. I HAVE FOUND THIS UNIT TO HAVE VERY AVERAGE BATTERY LIFE. WE AR UNABLE TO POWER THE UNIT UP AFTER ANY PERIOD. OTHER COLLEAGUES HAVE MAGELLANS AND SEEM VERY SATISFIED.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS UNIT AND WOULD SUGGEST ANOTHER MANUFACTURER.

This item offered here (PowerLine 0900-27 Global Power Travel Kit) is actually two different converters built into one package. At LOW setting (up to 50W), it uses a small AC transformer to convert 220V sinusoidal waveform into a 110V sinusoidal waveform. This is the preferred approach which works well for any low power appliance.

To handle higher power, however, the AC transformer must be made bulkier and heavier (around 20 pounds just for 1000W). This makes it impractical as a travel voltage converter for large-wattage appliance. First things first, Escort has discontinued the 9500i in blue (but not red), which is probably why Amazon is the only authorized dealer that's selling it for well under MSRP.

A few days after I bought this, I took a trip from Detroit to Chicago, so I really got a chance to see how this fared against my trusty Beltronics RX55 Pro Radar Detector. I'm happy to report that this is the best radar detector I've used.

I thought the blue display was a gimmick for Escort to fleece tuner kids out of fifty bucks, but I was really surprised to see how much gentler it was on my eyes -- and perhaps more importantly, how it doesn't scream "RADAR DETECTOR HERE!" the same way red displays do.
