I originally had a old Magellan Explorist 500 that I used for geocaching and hiking. Unfortunately it just became a little to outdated and I wanted to upgrade to something with the new SirfIII chip. I first purchase a Magellan Triton 400. That was a bad move. Although it was a nice unit the functionality was just not there and the unit lacks a lot of features. I then purchased the 60CSx from Amazon and have been incredibly pleased with the unit. The unit has quick satellite acquisition, good battery life, great accuracy and a very impressive feature set. On top of that the unit is versatile and works well for trail hiking, geocaching and driving so long as you have the required maps. The unit has a very rugged design and has taken quite ... I have used this product a little over a month now and have no major issues with the unit. The only problem I have had so far is with the fm transmitter, because my antenna is in the rear of the car so it does not pick up the signal too well so there is a lot of static. For the price there is no other product in the market that can meet the TomTom 720 specs, such as bluetooth, voice guided directions, mp3 player, and so much more. By far the best feature is the quick re-routing directions, for example if you miss a turn or exit it will quickly calculate another route. Overall, great product for the price and you may think it is a refurbished unit there has to be something wrong, but there isn't and on top of the low price is an original factory warranty! ... Let me start out our that I only have experience with the nuvi 200w and the 765t so my opinions don't expand beyond these two devices.
Everything about the 765t has improved from previous versions. The nice matte black color and the textured finish really are great cosmetic touches and make this $450 device feel like $450. The mapping and navigation are in typical garmin fashion, superb. The lane guidance is VERY helpful and is the reason I bought a new garmin to begin with. It really does take the guess work out of freeway driving. I had never driven in San Francisco before and I went up there for a concert. The roads are tricky but with the lane guidance I had no problem. The real life picture of the roads pops up now and then in tricky ... Read More:
I got lost while hiking a few years ago and decided that I needed to research hand held GPS units. I put that decision off until I started hiking with my kids. After looking at many reviews, I settled on the Garmin Vista HCx. My top priorities were to have a small hand held unit with a highly sensitive GPS receiver (since most of my walks are in forested areas). After thinking about it some more, I thought a color display, the ability to add detailed maps, and a compass would be nice. The Vista HCx was the cheapest Garmin I could find that met all my criteria (and the Amazon reviews were reasonable). I picked one up along with the Garmin topo maps and a micro-sd card and started to play with it. I was impressed with the size of the device along with the quality ... Read More:
Buy a Garmin! My sister buys Garmins & never has any problems with them. I've used this 4 times. The third time I tried to use it it took 10 minutes to turn on. The fourth time it took about 25 minutes to turn on. Now it does absolutely nothing at all. The green light comes on but there is no picture & no sound. It's just a blank screen. I just wasted $144.
The Navigon 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigation with Text-to-Speech and Free Traffic Alerts is packed with features, fairly easy to setup with menu's grouped intellingently for general and specific settings. If you are new to GPS technology as I was (Yeah, I know Johnny come lately) be aware that it does take a considerable amount of time for the GPS to locate it's position the very first time you use it. I took mine outside, placed it on a chair and left it for about 35 minutes before it finally logged it's position the first time. Also the subsequent searches for new destinations can take 3-4 Minutes (not the 2 or less it states.)
For the price (and I have been waiting some time because the $400-$600 I was seeing on these units was just too steep) this delivers bang ... Read More:
It has a few quirks, but all in all, a very good and easy to use GPS. We recently used it on a 3700 mile trip and discovered all its peccadilloes as well as its advantages. The latter outweigh the former. An annoying feature is for some inexplicable reason the GPS will sometimes take us on circuitous detours that don't seem to make much sense. Eventually you get where you need to be but a person familiar with the area would find it a bit strange. We love Starbucks, so the points of interest feature came in handy for locating them in unfamiliar towns along our route. Even so, we occasionally got routed to a location where a Starbucks didn't exist. Just one of the mysteries of the GPS world, I guess.
Overall, I like this GPS. It doesn't have the text to speech feature which could come in handy ... Read More:
I read a few reviews and did my research before I bought this unit. The famous line " looks can be deceiving" is all I have to say about it.
Pro:
The design is slick
Lane assistance is helpful (the main reason why I bought it)
Cons:
Bluetooth works but not al the time. The unit didn't recognize my phone when it was turned on and even when I tried to reconnect it couldn't recognize it.
Touch screen is not responsive. You really have to put pressure on the screen to get it to work right.
Main map has no color scheme selections and it's very hard to read grey on gray. I guess if you only care about your final destination it shouldn't matter.
The speaker is not loud enough even with my windows up. Unless you have it 5 inches from the ear don't expect to hear voice commands. ... Read More:
