Scrub (without soap) first, let dry, add 1 large bottle of peanut oil, heat and french fry 2 or 3 pounds of potatoes to season Dutch Oven, and you're all set to cook your favorite recipes. The top will also fit the 10-1/2" round griddle plus regular skillet - very kewl.

I bought this Lodge Dutch Oven because it was recommended by Cooks Illustrated and for the color. It is beautiful, but was disappointed upon opening to see that it was made in China. This fact needs to be made prominent in the Product Features or Product Details. It is insufficient to bury this information in the Product Description. There are plenty of people, including myself, that do not want to buy products, especially cookware, made in China.

... it's a replacement for the 5-qt. dutch oven I used weekly which was lost when moving. $53 Lodge vs. $210 Le Creuset. The 75% savings paid for a complete 10-piece set of Cuisinart Chef's Classic stainless steel. (Bought the original Le Creuset in 1991 as part of a 2 fry pans, 2 sauce, 1 dutch oven set for $170.)
Don't know yet if I like the shallower/wider shape as I'm so accustomed to long-cooking dishes in a deep pot. But, it is a generous 6-qts. (rather than 5), it cooks the same, and the quality is on par with the Le Creuset. There is not as much surface contact with the heating element, but I love the rounded interior bottom for stirring up the pot!
This Lodge enameled cast-iron is a beauty--bought the ... Read More:

These one-piece lid lifters are prone to dumping ash in the food. They're better than nothing, but don't grip the lid tighly.
They don't grip the lid firmly like the good lifters (with the three legs and the hook operated by gripping the handle). The good lid lifters retail for about the same price as this lifter. There's no reason to buy this design. They will will put a huge smile on your face the first time you discover you don't have to do any kind of balancing act.
I've been looking on Amazon, but for some odd reason it looks like they don't carry the good lid lifters, which are available at any outdoors store that carries dutch ovens. Please Amazon, offer the three-leg+hook lifters, sometimes called "deluxe" lifters! ... Read More:
My family and I went camping last weekend and used this dutch oven to cook potatoes, chili and vegetables in it and the lid makes perfect eggs. This will pretty much cook everything! Definitey worth the $$$
If you are interested in traditional dutch oven cooking (with coals), this is the one to buy. Though not strictly required, having the legs built into the oven is convenient, as it not only saves you from having to prop the oven up on racks or rocks, but also makes it easier to put on a table. The lid, as in all Lodge dutch ovens, is purpose-made to hold coals, and the loop of the lid handle is high enough to stick up well above the coals for use with a lid lifter. It is also a useful size to buy. While it's tempting to go for a smaller dutch oven, the larger sizes hold and spread heat much better and burn less. The 10s and 12s are really the most useful sizes.

A very good buy; cost effective. Giving 4 points because the handle gets hot and so one has to look for other means to move it after cooking.
I have both the 5 1/2 quart round and the 9 1/2 oval in the beautiful Flame color, and both have had unbelievably delicious results. I've baked bread in these, cooked meats that literally fall off the bone, soups, sticky cheese sauces, you name it! They're really easy to clean too. Le Creuset is indeed pricey, but they are so worth it. These will undoubtedly out-live me. These cost a lot of money for a reason--you're getting THE BEST.

Lodge is a leader in cast iron cookware and the quality of their dutch ovens proves it. The cover has a great seal and the pre seasoning is wonderful. I wouldn't buy any other brand and I couldn't find it any cheaper anywhere else.
