Ranger Rick

As a neighbor, aunt, and grandmother, I give Ranger Rick to a number of kids. It fosters reading, encourages the love of nature, and provides hours of fun. It's not expensive, plus it keeps on giving. The low subscription price is negligible, yet the child gets a "present" every month.

My youngest daughter loves this magazine and I love that there is no advertising in it. The baby animals are very attractive to children and that keeps them interested in reading about them. I also receive Spider magazine for my older child and it does not contain advertising either.

I ordered this through Amazon because ordering it through the National Wildlife Federation website was not successful--and I tried twice. The magazine has not yet arrived so I cannot review it. I can review the NWF's website as difficult to negotiate. If it never arrives I'll have an opinion about that too.

Zoobooks

I have been ordering Zoobooks for several years for my grandson. He loves them. When we go for hikes on our city trails or to the zoo, he is always giving me information that he learned in Zobooks on the animals we see. I am fascinated with all the knowledge he has gained from Zoobooks.

Ask

I am seven years old. My favorite section is "Ask Jimmy and the Bug". The questions that kids send in are very interesting. "Marvin and Friends" is another good part of the magazine. Most of the time it's very funny. I recommend this magazine very much.

Brio

Brio magazine is a christian girl's magazine for about 13-16 year olds, although it could be for as young as 8 or 9. Brio and Beyond is just the 'graduated' version, for 16-22 year olds. Being in the "brio" age group, I would highly reccomend Brio. It's the only magazine I am subscribed too, and I read it front to back the day it arrives in the mail. I really couldn't see a magazine more suitable for teen girls. It is perfect, and has a lot of fun suggestions to do with friends and siblings or yourself. one of my favorites was when they gave gace masks recipes, another one was Chai tea recipes. Boys Life

I was really disappointed with this magazine because it is so full of advertisements and blatant "product placement." It seems to promote "pop culture" and related attitudes rather than truly exploring nature and values. Sadly, aside from Boys Quest (which is too young for my son), I haven't found another magazine aimed at the 10-14 year-old boy. For those who have really open-minded, secure boys, or progressive girls, I recommend New Moon Magazine -- it's an outstanding ad-free pub.

Cricket

Cricket magazine contains high quality short stories for children. They do a great job of defining a theme for each issue and tying several stories to it. They also do a great job at exposing young people to different cultures and ideas in a very mature way.

And, of course, a huge chunk of my vocabulary skills came from Cricket, literally to this day. I remember going through elementary school and recognizing long words that I learned specifically from this mag! I also brought copies of it to class many times to share with my 5th grade teacher because we'd always end up studying something in school that had a related article in Cricket that I had read. I have been a fan of Cricket magazines since I first subscribed to Babybug when my daughter was a baby. She is now 3.5 years-old and I currently subscribe to Ladybug and Click. Ladybug takes off from Babybug in that it has stories and poems that are illustrated in full-color and the text is engaging for young and aspiring readers.

Click is a magazine for preschoolers and beginning readers who are curious about the world we live in - the magazine explores different themes in every issue, for e.g. transportation etc. The explanations are brief so kids will not get bored, and there are plenty of pictures and illustrations to capture young children's imagination.
