Harper's is a terrific magazine. Do NOT however, DO NOT, buy this magazine from Amazon!!! Here is why: the WAIT. Normally, when a person buys a magazine subscription, they get the first magazine the following month. AMAZON TAKES 4-5 MONTHS!!! I bought this subscription for my father whose birthday was in August. He called me in October to sheepishly ask where the magazine was. After complaining, Amazon said they would get it there by November. HUH???!!! Now, I just got an email saying they made an error and it would now ship SOMETIME IN JANUARY!!! Oh, but they were nice enough to make it up to me by offering me a free subscription to Inc. magazine!!! WTF???!!! What does Inc. have even remotely in common with Harpers?! I called Amazon ... The Nation

The Nation is a great publication that has featured the works of scholarly writers such as Eric Alterman, Barbara Ehrenreich, Noam Chomsky and Norman Mailer. Though the issues addressed and the opinions expressed are often labeled as leftist, this magazine nonetheless contains some very thought-provoking nuances and propositions for a better America that sound intelligent.

Though many are outraged about some of the stances that the editors and contributors of The Nation have taken, their retorts often fall short of being strong, tangible, clearly expressed responses. I wanted to give this magazine subscription as a gift but was unable to order it with a gift card or gift notice. I had to call the recipient to tell him to be on the lookout for the magazine to start in 4 to 6 weeks. It would be nice if you offered a gift option with your magazine subscriptions.

I subscribed in July waited patiently as instructed for the October issue and when I called Amazon to inquire as to why I had not received it, I was given the run around and ultimately told that even if i never got an issue I also would NEVER get a refund: "We don't refund magazine subscriptions."

I've been looking for a magazine such as this since the one I previously subscribed to is no longer in publication. My first copy arrived sooner than expected and was happy to see that it has something for every type book reader. Thanks, also, to Amazon.com for bringing it to my attention.

this magazine is usually well received among progressive activists although many of us had a major problem with some coverage in the past. i won't get to it at this time but i must say that the last one i've read (?May/June edition) had a very good coverage in the issue of the prison industrial complex, putting human faces behind all the build up of prisons, the absurd increase in the prison population in the U.S. by far leading in the incarceration of our people, young and old alike, the racist system we still live in, etc. also, the coverage for the issue of foreclosure was very thorough and finally shed some light on my questions regarding the reasons why, and who is responsible for this mess. check it out.

As as Senior Citizen I am taking a Class on Creative Writing, I thought the Magazine "Writer" would help me get an insite into the world of Writing as well as some hints on writing.

I was not disappointed, I have learned from my first issue, now I am looking forward to the next issue.

Writer's Digest is a magazine designed for writers and it attempts to cover many different aspects of writing in its columns and featured articles. Most every issue offers at least one interview with a famous or semi- famous author. This spotlighted author could be the author of a book, a screen writer, or some other type of author. These interviews offer some good insight into writing success and the necessary skills and sacrifices to succeed at your chosen craft.

Aside from the interviews, Writer's Digest is basically a magazine of tips and advice. One issue might talk about ways to break into the business of movie reviewing for newspapers. Poets & Writers Magazine

To be absolutely clear, I am a fan of P&W and if I were only rating them here, I'd give them 4 or 5 stars. My beef is with Amazon's advertising "up to 75% off" for subscriptions. I've checked the rates for VQR, Poetry, Writer's Digest, and Poets & writers, and I'm four for four: Amazon's rates are either exactly the same as those posted on these journals' websites, or (in the case of Writer's Digest and P&W) more expensive. It's nice, I guess, that Amazon is providing more exposure for these journals; nonetheless, for them to claim they're offering a discount, while not exactly a lie (since they're offering a discount over the per-copy price), is deceiving, as they don't seem to be offering a cheaper rate than that already offered by the journals.
