I'm still a fairly new beader so a mag intended for beginner to intermediate doesn't bother me. The problem I have with many of the other bead and/or jewelry mags is that they are mostly big expensive glossy advertisements containing little useful information regarding projects, information or anything related to what I want in a magazine about beads. This one is different and does not disappoint. It may not be as big and glossy as the others, but it has a variety of projects on practically every other page (jewelry, accessories, home projects and more), has very few ads (the ones they do have are unobtrusive), is fun to read and the instructions are clear, easy to follow and so far, accurate. It has a couple articles each month, and each issue ... Read More:
This is a magazine that pushes you to create more and better beadwork. It focuses on seed beads, not stringing, and really opens up your mind to the possibilities.
Every amateur jeweler (and lots of pros) should read this magazine. Each month, it offers a wide range of how-to articles aimed at different skill levels, including complete projects. The gallery section might really get your creative juices flowing, though. When I see so many fine pieces in so many materials and styles, it really makes me want to drop the magazine and get back to the bench. And, of course, the ads offer crafters many sources of tools, metal, gems, books, and other necessities.
Step by step beads has never been my "favorite" out of all the beading magazines out there because you do not see the passion and creativity applied as in some of the other magazines. While reading the last couple of issues, I had to stop and look back at the cover a few times to remind myself which magazine I was reading. It seems that lately the projects are getting better and better, and I can't seem to put the magazine down. They are fun, imaginative, and getting more complex in design, which I like, than the have in the past. I hope the designers keep up with the new creativity that they have found. Now, I am looking forward to the new issues to arrive each time.
I love this magazine! I cross-stitched in the 70-80s before my eyes were less co-operative which led me to beading. This magazine combines both beading and cross-stitch! The terrific patterns are varied: blackwork, 3D (ex. Santa, mobile, lizards) mixed media (cross stitch paper, box) and of course the usual jewelry (great amulet bags), wall hangings, pillows. They have good instructions-although occasionally the Australian terms for products makes you have to search for that item. They aren't cutesy like many cross-stitch mags. The stitching patterns have a good amt of depth/detail. The paper quality is wonderful and charts are easy to enlarge if you need to. The most recent issue addressed why she added beading. Plain and simple--it kept her magazine alive. ... Read More:
