Got this as a gift for my mom who just took up painting. She called to say she got two issues at once, which isn't great because you pay a hefty price for only 6 months of issues and she got one third of the gift at once. She said it's neat and there are a lot of things she's never seen before like names of brush strokes and styles. She excited, so I'm excited. Just wished the first issue would have come sooner.
I'm a bit new to watercolor (or at least taking it seriously), but I've found this magazine to be an excellent help in the process of making art. The interviews and articles are informative and detailed in the processes of the art making and there's a good spread of different information in every issue. Sometimes books are a bit daunting for me, and there's not enough time to absorb all the information, but this format makes it easier for me to learn techniques. I find myself reading an article at a time and then remembering that information later when I'm painting with ease... It's also nice to have a variety of artists to learn from in every issue. I find myself learning from artists that I would not usually buy a book about or spend ... Read More:
After reading a review here mentioning subscription issues I went directly to American Artists web site and ordered a subscription. That was November 23, 2005 and now Feb. 10, 2006 still no magazine. When I finally complained I got a request to send my credit info again to vnu@espcomp.com. Can't say from looking at that address that I have confidence I was communicating with American Artist or a magazine publisher. Would you send your credit info...I think not. I'd say don't blame Amazon as a previous reviewer did. Hey, the magazine is good if you can get a subscription.
I have had a subscription for the past year and was extremely disappointed. I was looking for a magazine that would publish interviews of various painters working in various styles who would explain their techniques and experiences as working artists. I was, however, very disappointed. First, this magazine weirdly seems to be one long advertisement. That aside, the painters and pieces published are all based in realism. I have nothing against realism, but I was looking for a collection of diverse approaches. Something of a salon for painters. This is not what this magazine is aiming to achieve. This magazine would only be potentially useful for an inexperienced painter who is interested in painting classical realism.
A lot of the reviewers here have mentioned problems with one cover story. Don't let that put you off this mag. It and its sister mag MAKE are great. They show a different look at the craft industry than you get when you look in chains like Michaels and Hobby Lobby. Craft and diy are huge and it's not all about scrapbooking and decorative painting. There are heaps of indi crafters doing great things and who, until now, have been largely hidden from mainstream consumers. CRAFT gives these people a platform to showcase their stuff - and it is great - the only pity of it is that in publicising these new takes on old crafts indi is now becoming mainstream! Go figure. Do yourself a favor and check out the magazine - there is plenty to look at and to ... Read More:
This magazine is inspiring to the beginner and a challenge to the experienced watercolorist. I never tire of seeing the great work of the artists highlighted in this magazine.
The issues often have workshop-like articles on using computer graphics software, how to handle color, composition or other technical aspects. And then there is just the eye candy, purely for artistic pleasure. While your own painting may not reach the heights of these wonderful artists, the act of looking at paintings, of studying technique and seeing alternative ways of expressing subjects is a solid way to improve one's own art. I prefer "Watercolor" to other art magazines because it focuses on my own medium fully and really goes into depth.

A subscription to this non-magazine was a gift. So far I have received one issue. However, I feel that potential subcribers need to know that this is not worth the paper it is printed on. The projects are outdated, very simplistic and not creative or attractive. The issue which I received was a whopping 38 pages. If a product could be rated MINUS 5 stars, that's what this is.
