As as Senior Citizen I am taking a Class on Creative Writing, I thought the Magazine "Writer" would help me get an insite into the world of Writing as well as some hints on writing.
I was not disappointed, I have learned from my first issue, now I am looking forward to the next issue.
Writer's Digest is a magazine designed for writers and it attempts to cover many different aspects of writing in its columns and featured articles. Most every issue offers at least one interview with a famous or semi- famous author. This spotlighted author could be the author of a book, a screen writer, or some other type of author. These interviews offer some good insight into writing success and the necessary skills and sacrifices to succeed at your chosen craft.
Aside from the interviews, Writer's Digest is basically a magazine of tips and advice. One issue might talk about ways to break into the business of movie reviewing for newspapers. Another might talk about ways to make your writing more concise and less wordy. Still ... Read More:
I like Asimov better than ANALOG, but that's kind of like saying that I like strawberry better than chocolate or vanilla. It's a matter of personel tastes. I especially like the new book section. I've ordered one book from it already.
Where do I begin? This magazine has it all for fans of Sci-fi, the only periodical which can rival it is Asimov's. But, if you're like me, you like a combination of real science as well as the fiction, and Analog excels at bringing both to the reader. I always feel a sense of anticipation when opening up a new issue of Analog, it's just so consistently good. If you've never tried Analog before, and love Sci-fi, I'd say get a copy today, or better yet, subscribe, you won't be sorry.
The writing in the Paris Review is probably unmatched elsewhere in a popularly available magazine. Other magazines and reviews sometimes have top quality pieces, maybe one or two excellent pieces in each issue, but I found that the high standards of quality in the Paris Review is very rarely matched. The Paris Review unlike most publications is systematically excellent.
The fictional stories are interesting and seemingly unique. The poetry is vivid and compelling. The interviews and non-fiction pieces also are no less enticing, excellent and important. If you are interested in writing, in reading compelling fiction and non-fiction, or the creative arts generally, I strongly recommend this magazine.
The quality of the writing in this publication is highly inconsistent. There are feature articles that are amateurishly written, poorly structured and unfocused. The writers thrust themselves into the articles with embarrassing regularity, rabbitting on about irrelevant and indulgent personal information. Poorly edited, with boring introductory paragraphs and horrible layout and design. This is a lesson on how NOT to write, edit and produce a publication.
Tin House is a terrific literary magazine. It's full of progressive, often experimental, prose, poetry, essays, etc. Check out "Bestial Noise" which is a collection of writing by many Tin House writers.
It seems almost sacriligeous to find fault with the TLS which for many is a kind of book-review Bible. But when compared to other book- review venues including the NY Times Bookreview and the NY Review of Books, I find it somehow chauvinistically British and narrowly focused. I also must admit to not liking the skimpy look of the journal.
I base my remarks here not on one reading of one journal but on my general feeling after going through many many different editions of TLS over many years.
Now I should qualify this by saying that there are of course many many outstanding reviews of outstanding books, and outstanding round- up surveys on special feature reviews. However when it comes to areas in which I have a degree of specialization, I usually ... Read More:
The stories I've read in Zoetrope have been generally long with a surprising twist close to the ending.
You can check out zoetrope's website to see what's coming up before you subscribe. They sometimes have famous people (writers, tv producers, etc) contribute work.
