To be absolutely clear, I am a fan of P&W and if I were only rating them here, I'd give them 4 or 5 stars. My beef is with Amazon's advertising "up to 75% off" for subscriptions. I've checked the rates for VQR, Poetry, Writer's Digest, and Poets & writers, and I'm four for four: Amazon's rates are either exactly the same as those posted on these journals' websites, or (in the case of Writer's Digest and P&W) more expensive. It's nice, I guess, that Amazon is providing more exposure for these journals; nonetheless, for them to claim they're offering a discount, while not exactly a lie (since they're offering a discount over the per-copy price), is deceiving, as they don't seem to be offering a cheaper rate than that already offered by the ... I know APR is supposed to be one of the better poetry magazines out there, and I think it has one of the highest circulations of any poetry magazine, but it's more of the National Enquirer of poetry magazines. It's a large, newspaper-style format that contains mostly bad poetry and dull articles. You'd be better off subscribing to Poetry, The Hudson Review, The Texas Review, Tar River Poetry, or any number of other journals.

I find it quite funny that almost 3000 people have posted a review for the DaVinci Code, and no one has reviewed AQR, one of the world's foremost forums of contemporary literature. As a reader of short stories I can say the 30 or so stories published each year in this magazine help set the trend for fiction writing, consistently, year on year. Some of these stories are simply magnificent - the best I've read anywhere. Journals like this are terribly under-rated, and their only objective is to produce the highest quality writing. There is negligible payout and no profit involved. This is art here, folks, in the truest sense of the word.

I can't imagine who they're trying to appeal to. The current issue's recourse to Kitty Kelly was the straw that broke the camel's back.
