As a neighbor, aunt, and grandmother, I give Ranger Rick to a number of kids. It fosters reading, encourages the love of nature, and provides hours of fun. It's not expensive, plus it keeps on giving. The low subscription price is negligible, yet the child gets a "present" every month.

My youngest daughter loves this magazine and I love that there is no advertising in it. The baby animals are very attractive to children and that keeps them interested in reading about them. I also receive Spider magazine for my older child and it does not contain advertising either.

We received our first issue of National Geographic Kids today and promptly cancelled it the same day. I didn't even want my son to see it. Not only is it filled with advertising but the "science" articles are unsophisticated and tabloid-ish. I wish we had read the reviews before ordering. We assumed that this would be comparable to World Magazine and were terribly wrong.
I get other more "mainstream" parenting magazines, and they are full of nothing but fluff - regurgitations of the same articles I've read a million times already.
Wondertime is fresh and exciting. I'm not surprised to see it getting lower reviews, because it is geared more toward the intelligentsia and upwardly mobile. Perhaps many of the subscribers reviewing here just don't "get it".
It's a great magazine for those of us that think Parents is full of fluff and mainstream crap (like cry-it-out advice and how to keep up with the Joneses) but think that Mothering is waaaaaaaaaay too extreme on the other end. It's a nice combination.
This magazine really is perfect. It features real everyday girls, showing that girls really can do anything. Many people say that it isn't appropriate for an 8 or 9 year old, and not all of it is. But, there are several parts that really would be nice for those younger girls. If you were a parent of a younger girl who was interested in DG (Discovery Girls) I would suggest briefly looking through it before you would give it to her. But, once a girl is about 10 or 11 and they're mature enough it is quite perfect.
DG mostly covers advice about growing up and all of the things that come along with it. If you are looking for crafts and recipes it might not be the best magazine for you. The American Girl Magazine might be better. But, the only ... Read More:
Fantastic magazine. But buy it directly from the publisher. The subscription price is exactly what amazon is offering, anyway, and you'll get it a lot faster. We also bought two sets of a year's worth from eBay.
I saw an issue of this magazine at the Louisville Science Museum yesterday when Isaiah, who is six, and I spent a rainy day exploring science and inventions. I don't remember what topic the issue covered, but the magazine's focus on science interested Isaiah so I thought about getting him a subscription for Christmas. Of course, as soon as I came home, I went immediately to Amazon's site to hear what other parents thought about it. I was shocked at the number of one-star reviews and clicked on that link in order to see what the problem was. I now know about the heavy-handed collection tactics and apparently deceptive subscription techniques. I have NO interest in becoming ensnared in anything like that. I also appreciated the info about out-of-date information, ... Read More:
Got this as a gift for my mom who just took up painting. She called to say she got two issues at once, which isn't great because you pay a hefty price for only 6 months of issues and she got one third of the gift at once. She said it's neat and there are a lot of things she's never seen before like names of brush strokes and styles. She excited, so I'm excited. Just wished the first issue would have come sooner.
