As an elementary art teacher, this is a great resource! Not only are there many, many ideas for all age groups (many are very adaptable with a little creativity) it is a great source for new products. The clip cards are wonderful and I especially love the new Famous Artist cards - giving a short bio of each artist in a card format. I keep all my clip cards organized in a file box and it has grown to be a fantastic place to look for new ideas no matter what grade I am teaching this week. I look forward to every issue. This magazine is a great inspirational tool!
This is a wonderful magazine for children, filled with puzzles, quizzes, great illustrations, and articles aimed at 9 - 13 year olds, plus science that's fun to learn. It's been around for over 30 years, so you know that means it truly is exceptional in the publishing world. The other reviewer shouldn't fault the magazine and not update the "review" based on delivery problems, since her complaint came only 6 weeks after the order. It clearly states above that delivery might take 6-10 weeks, and I've learned to be very patient with subscriptions ordered through Amazon. (But they always showed up!) So don't blame the publisher -- it's still a terrific magazine!
I have been receiving Brio for a little more than four years. I am now about to turn 17 and have upgraded to Brio and Beyond. To be honest it surprised and disappointed me to see some of the reviews that brio got. It's pretty safe to say that if you want a "right" review about brio, then turn to a present reader, and a current teenager.
First off, let me begin by saying that I don't think that I could give brio enough thank you's. It makes me laugh to myself when I see how people take magazines like brio for granted, calling it "brainwashing," "morality in disguise," or "Christian claptrap." If this was the case, I would have chucked my subscription out awhile ago. Yes, I admit that there are things in the magazine that I have my own beliefs ... Read More:
I first came across this magazine years ago when it was a fledgling publication. I was so impressed that I filed it in my memory banks and years later, when my daughter was about 6, I bought her a subscription. She's thirteen and still loves it. This magazine is ad-free and is written by girls, for girls. They promote open-minded exploration of ideas and values. And they explore all sorts of topics girls are interested in, everything from friendships to menstruation to zits to human rights to natural resources -- all without ads or stupid stereotypes. I highly recommend this magazine and often give it as a gift! My only regret: they don't publish a similar magazine for boys! Most boys mags are just trendy trash.

When I was in elementary and junior high school, I thought learning about ancient civilizations was incredibly boring. But CALLIOPE presents information that actually makes world history interesting. The magazine's editors and writers make sure that readers understand how societies of long ago are making an impact in our lives right now. And that's worth learning about! The variety of topics covered (each issue has a theme) is outstanding--from the French Revolution to the dynasties of China to the Olympic games, just to name a few. The stories and activities are engaging. The photos and illustrations are top-notch. Only criticism I have--I wish CALLIOPE would come out 12 times a year instead of nine!
