I like the magazine, except for all the prefabricated items required, and the number of projects which absolutely require a particular rubber stamp to complete. I'm not into rubber stamping. It's a good magazine for inspiration, just not a whole lot of "do it this way" ideas because I don't have access to many of the products.
Warning: If you want any of their special publications, order them from a trustworthy site like Amazon, if they carry them. Never seeing the special pubs. in this small town, I happily went to the mag's website to order 4 of them. May 24th I ordered, and they charged my credit card right then. (showed up even at Citi's website that they'd processed the payment.) 3 weeks passed, and the "order info" link ... Read More:
I found my first "Cross Stitcher" at a bookstore and was hooked. Finding them untouched, with all the pieces still inside, is nearly impossible as some folks like to open the plastic bag in which it is sent and see what's inside - and in doing that, the special "gift" with each issue is lost. Issue 200 (for example) enclosed a new cloth bag for a person's stitching/sewing kit. Each magazine is full of new titles that I have never seen (yet they are ubiquitous in England) and the advertisements in the back have opened new cross stitch doors and vendors for me. "Cross Stitcher" has projects for beginners as well as experienced stitchers and as something that I appreciate, an estimate of how long each project should take you. All in all, a terrific ... This mag is absolutely fab! Being a little bit wiley these days with my funds, (student) I cannot afford to subscribe to all the magazines that I like. This is the only one that I have GOT to have every time! It is a very good publication because it covers a wide variety of topics without scrimping on any info. A lot of magazines are beading mags, and only really cover beading. There are also metalsmith mags, that only really cover metalsmithing. This one manages to cover things like beginner metalsmithing, PMC, polymerclay and other interesting techniques. It is great for expanding your knowlege on things you may not have considered using in your jewellery making endeavors.... I reccommend this issue very very highly for people who like to get an ... Wood Magazine is been around for a good 20 years now. It is a every other month magazine published by Good Housekeeping (I think it still is). Always a good mix of product reviews, 5-6 projects none harder than advanced, and lots of how-to's. Magazines are thick with a lot of information in each issue.
Projects can be part of a family, say a mission table, chairs, and china cupboard spread over 2-3 issues. Extremely precise directions, layouts and materials lists for projects and an insert for patterns is usually included. Product reviews include a wide range of manufacturers, but usually skip the high end brands and go for lower end.
Always tons of tips and how-tos in every issue. They do expect you to have access to the usual assortment ... Read More:
Memory Makers Magazine promises "a community of ideas and inspiration primarily for scrapbooking", and the magazine does a good job hitting their target. Memory Makers is published nine times a year by F&W Publications, and sells at a reasonable price. The newsstand cover price is $5.95, but a yearly subscription can go as low as $2 - $3 per issue if you search for discounts. The magazine does not undertake anything ambitious, just creative layouts that are doable for your average scrapbooker.
Scrapbooking subjects are tackled by dividing them into three departments: community, ideas, and inspiration. Community includes Journaling Spot, On the Web, Reader Mail, ScrapHappenings, and Great Finds. Ideas cover Calendar, Digital Design, ... Read More:
Every amateur jeweler (and lots of pros) should read this magazine. Each month, it offers a wide range of how-to articles aimed at different skill levels, including complete projects. The gallery section might really get your creative juices flowing, though. When I see so many fine pieces in so many materials and styles, it really makes me want to drop the magazine and get back to the bench. And, of course, the ads offer crafters many sources of tools, metal, gems, books, and other necessities.
Woodcraft is a magazine published by the Woodcraft woodworking stores and it shows. There is a lot more reviews of products than with other magazines. Projects are good but not many beginner ones. Geared more toward folks that have some good woodworking background. Projects are there and well written but not many per issue (3-4). Lots of write-up about layout and less on how to do that step (Assumes you know how to do mortises and tongue and groove for instance).
Why 3 stars? Not very thick per a bi-annual issue (few ads!) so rather pricy. I have not done any projects like I have with Woodworker Journal (my #1 choice). One of a few magazines I let the subscription run out.
