Excellent magazine.
But subscribe direct from the publisher for $24. We don't understand why Amazon marks this one "up" to $25. Usually Amazon offers good subscription rates, but not here.
This publication is one of the few that you need with almost everything going on to the web these days. For those interested in the five string banjo it is a must for keeping up with the pickers and the new literature for the five string. It is the only print publication I subscribe to.
I subscribe to all of the US based guitar magazines and one of the European mags. This is the best of the US mags. The writing is done well, interviews are thorough and the gear coverage is fantastic. I am turned off by "Guitar World"'s juvenile writing and articles. "Guitar Player", while the better of the two, is a little too artist-centric for my tastes. The stock of "Premiere Guitar" magazine is top notch and the photography is fantastic. While the layout design maybe considered by some as austere or vanilla, it is a pleasant change of pace from the wild, and at times neurotic, layouts of GW. Best of all, Premiere Guitar is huge every month! It typically spans almost 250 pages.

Granta is a great periodical. I read quite a few issues from years back in addition to newer issues. The writers featured are not really as "hip" as they are talented and engaging. Well assembled, interesting, great format and timely.
The writing in the Paris Review is probably unmatched elsewhere in a popularly available magazine. Other magazines and reviews sometimes have top quality pieces, maybe one or two excellent pieces in each issue, but I found that the high standards of quality in the Paris Review is very rarely matched. The Paris Review unlike most publications is systematically excellent.
The fictional stories are interesting and seemingly unique. The poetry is vivid and compelling. The interviews and non-fiction pieces also are no less enticing, excellent and important. If you are interested in writing, in reading compelling fiction and non-fiction, or the creative arts generally, I strongly recommend this magazine.
PLAY is the only Video Game MAG I have ever subscribed to and currently it's the only subscription I have period. It has great visual style, and often covers games I wanna play. But I'm sure it's not for everyone, and no good magazine of any interest should be.
Dave Halverson and his band of merry geeks have turned me on to many and most of my favorite games. Having said that, the writing can leave me scratching my head sometimes, and it could use a more thorough proofreading regularly.
I work in magazine printing and on occasion I've seen some production problems in issues of PLAY that make me cringe. But it's hard not to be awestruck by the big beautiful glossy colorful pages that have detailed previews of fantastic ... Read More:

This is by far the best magazine I subscribe to. It is the one magazine I look forward to receiving every month. REMIX provides producers and DJ's an inside look into the recording studios of the most successful producers/musicians in the industry. They list the EXACT hardware and software each featured producer/musician is using to make mutiplatinum selling music. To me, this information is priceless. I would recommend this magazine to anybody that makes and/or wants to make music at a professional level!
I started reading the magazine in college. Utne was the first magazine I ever really enjoyed reading, I suddenly "got it". I would really like to subscribe to this magazine but, they have an automatic renewal policy, and I am personally against anyone taking my money without permission. I also don't subscribe to anything by Rodale Publishing for this reason; Men's Health, Fitness, Prevention, etc.
American Cinematographer can work for you or against you. I started a five year relationship that has recently ended. At the time about to attend film school, I needed all the help I could get to always be one-step ahead of everyone else.
The magazine did wonders. I knew more than the professors. Cinematography is a craft that should be practiced as well as read, of course, so my knowledge never reflected what I could actually do behind the lens. Reading specific articles while following along with a DVD copy of the article's movie is a wonderful exercise. The photographs in the magazine never quite live up to par with the real deal. If I wasn't concerned with spoilers, I wouldd read AC, then skip over to the theater and watch the results ... Read More:
