November 23, 2001
I have not yet received a single copy of this magazine. When I enquired about it I was told that the early November start-delivery date had been moved to late November, then early December.
When I complained towards the end of December I was told there would be a 3-5 day 'investigation' and somebody would get back to me about it.
I heard NOTHING.
At the time, I protested saying that I had already paid good money for this service and yet there seemed to be no way to resolve it. The operator I spoke to told me and I quote, "You've complained to me and it will take 3-5 days'.
This is pretty disgusting.
This is an excellent magazine. It is published by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and its standards are high, despite the remarks by the previous reviewer. RE: Nvasky, ignore the ad hominem attack. Executive Editor Michael Hoyt describes Navasky's role as "99% financial," saying "he doesn't push anything editorially," and that he has "learned how to get a small magazine of ideas into the black, and he's trying to come up with some strategies for us." CJR makes some articles available for free on its web site, so check them out and see for yourself.
It seems almost sacriligeous to find fault with the TLS which for many is a kind of book-review Bible. But when compared to other book- review venues including the NY Times Bookreview and the NY Review of Books, I find it somehow chauvinistically British and narrowly focused. I also must admit to not liking the skimpy look of the journal.
I base my remarks here not on one reading of one journal but on my general feeling after going through many many different editions of TLS over many years.
Now I should qualify this by saying that there are of course many many outstanding reviews of outstanding books, and outstanding round- up surveys on special feature reviews. However when it comes to areas in which I have a degree of specialization, ... Read More:
Casino Player is the end-all magazine for the serious gambler (and the gambler who likes weekend fun with lots of comps!). It is one of the pricier magazines, but the cost is well worth it, and it isn't over-run with advertising.
The letters to the editor touch on basic gaming, slot, and comp questions, and I always glean useful information from the Q&A section. The magazine content covers slot machines, video poker strategy and probability, table game strategy and expected pay-offs, investing in the gaming industry's publicly-held corporations, and reviews of properties, restaurants, and shows. I always read it before heading to Vegas to learn what is new and happening on the Strip and in the area.
Chess Life is the official magazine of the United State Chess Federation. A serious chess player cannot be without it.
It appeals to all levels of players, both experienced experts and masters as well as beginners. Even elementary school players will find resources here they can use and learn from.
In terms of the quality of production, it is growing and improving and pretty decent now, though that was not always the case before.
While compared to world-wide standards, Chess Life is fairly tame, you will be surprised however, by the amount of politics and jockeying found in the upper levels. FIDE is the real area, to see this at work, but the USCF has it tempests in tea pots as well.
Chess players can be passionate, and ... Read More:
The stories I've read in Zoetrope have been generally long with a surprising twist close to the ending.
You can check out zoetrope's website to see what's coming up before you subscribe. They sometimes have famous people (writers, tv producers, etc) contribute work.
I recently subscribed to JazzTimes. I had visited their website regularly, and I decided to receive the hard copy magazine. I like their mix of coverage of the established stars and the up-and-comers. They have some great contributors (Nat Hentoff, Gary Giddins). I like their wide-ranging disc review section. There is so little Jazz on the radio now - we need to find the new Jazz grooves through the Internet and magazines like JazzTimes.
