I have been a subscriber since the premier issue in 1975. Back then my workshop was a 4 by 8 foot room in front of my carport and my only power tool was an electric drill. The second issue prompted me to make my first hand cut dovetails. The main benefit I still get out of the magazine is it gives me the confidence to try new projects that demand new skills. While I buy Woodwork regularly, and occasionally other magazines at the news stand, Fine Woodworking is the only magazine I subscribe to year after year.

I have been brewing for about 5 years or so and this magazine has been very informative and helpful. The tips and tricks to make you go from a plastic bucket and pre-boxed beer kit maker (don't get me wrong these make great homebrew) to have the confidence to expand to glass carboys (double fermentation) and developing your own ingredient lists and recipies. It has lots of tips for beginners and for advanced brewers alike. A good mix in my opinion for a brewing magazine.
Starting picking up Paste Mag while in Iraq and have really discovered some new and fresh music to listen too. Every issue comes with a sampler CD with 20 or so songs on it of new music. If you are looking for new music of every genre....try checking out a copy.

$30 for a subscription saving 40%? This is such blatant false advertising! Anyone can get a subscription from the publisher direct for $26.95. Easy searching online can get you better than that from wholesale magazine distributors. This is pathetic.
And of course, I agree with everyone else, this is an awesome magazine. I am only criticizing Amazon here.

This purchase was made July 29,2007 along with Seventeen Magazine for my daughter. Around six weeks later I recieved my first Seventeen September issue, but no Essence. Then in September, when I recieved my daughter's second (october) issue of Seventeen, I also recieved September and Augusts Issues of Essence. The very next day I recieved the August issue!!!! How lame!!
I was very disappointed with my first issue of "The Strand." Very few stories, a couple of interviews and the rest was book reviews. For the price of the magazine and the fact that is a quarterly, it is a very sparse magazine. Although beautiful to look at and easy to read, there just isn't enough substance between the front and back covers.
My biggest disappointment was not with the magazine itself, but with the customer service at Magazine Express. I placed my order for the magazine in November, and knowing it was published quarterly, I didn't expect my first issue until well after the first of the year. However, when I had not received it my March, I began to wonder. I contacted customer service via email (took two times to get a response) and then I was ... Read More:
FYI- This is a Brittish rag that is generally superficial in it's take on the music scene. They give brief reviews of numerous new and re-issue CDs like most, but they are highly comercial in their tone and there are more ads than not. They are obsessed with the retrospectoscope, that is they have a fetish with classic British bands (and some american artists). The CDs are a mixed bag: from mostly interesting to worthless drivel. They are almost always current bands doing covers of the British artist they are drooling over this month.
Coin World or Numismatic News? I've been getting both for the past year and Coin World is clearly better. The news coverage is deeper, the letters to the editor are more insightful and it has more advertising. If you can afford both, get both, but if you have to choose, buy Coin World.
