I was very disappointed with my first issue of "The Strand." Very few stories, a couple of interviews and the rest was book reviews. For the price of the magazine and the fact that is a quarterly, it is a very sparse magazine. Although beautiful to look at and easy to read, there just isn't enough substance between the front and back covers.
My biggest disappointment was not with the magazine itself, but with the customer service at Magazine Express. I placed my order for the magazine in November, and knowing it was published quarterly, I didn't expect my first issue until well after the first of the year. However, when I had not received it my March, I began to wonder. I contacted customer service via email (took two times to get a response) ... Read More:
I like Asimov better than ANALOG, but that's kind of like saying that I like strawberry better than chocolate or vanilla. It's a matter of personel tastes. I especially like the new book section. I've ordered one book from it already.
I have subscribed to a few magazines like Creative Screenwriting and Writers Digest. I think this is one of the best magazines because it really looks at the writer and what writers go through in regards to writing a script. It's focus is not just on major movies like Creative Screenwriting. I think the big difference between the two is that Script has a variety of films/television it reviews and critiques. Also, it adds a writers view more than an editorial on a mega blockbuster film. Yes, you need to understand a review of a high concept film, but wouldn't you rather have a magazine like Script that provides information on what is a high concept first? And then break's down the craft and creative process? Sometimes it does it quite well, but capturing the ... Read More:
I have little complaint with the content of the NYRB but beware subscribing to them. They are known for their incompetence in delivery, in failing to acknowledge receipt of payment, and in consistently putting wrong address labels on their issues. BE WARNED.
I buy this for my husband each year for his birthday. He claims it's the best birthday gift he receives, and devours each issue as it comes to our mailbox. Very addictive -- if you love books!
Where do I begin? This magazine has it all for fans of Sci-fi, the only periodical which can rival it is Asimov's. But, if you're like me, you like a combination of real science as well as the fiction, and Analog excels at bringing both to the reader. I always feel a sense of anticipation when opening up a new issue of Analog, it's just so consistently good. If you've never tried Analog before, and love Sci-fi, I'd say get a copy today, or better yet, subscribe, you won't be sorry.

I started reading the magazine in college. Utne was the first magazine I ever really enjoyed reading, I suddenly "got it". I would really like to subscribe to this magazine but, they have an automatic renewal policy, and I am personally against anyone taking my money without permission. I also don't subscribe to anything by Rodale Publishing for this reason; Men's Health, Fitness, Prevention, etc.
I've been reading EQMM since I was a child and have always enjoyed it. I particularly like finding new mystery writers in it. Just this month, C J Harper has a very good tale in the tradition of Rex Stout and Phillip Marlowe.

The Wilson Quarterly is probably my favorite publication. Few others are as fascinating; its diversity and intellectualism make most other magazines pale in comparison. Simply extraordinary.
