when I buy a book on Amazon, I usually get it in a week----
but when I subscribe to a magazine like this, it takes
SIX WEEKS to get the first issue . . . what is it, they
don't have COMPUTERS at these stupid magazines????

When it comes the the unusual, the more literary and the suspenseful, it's Hitchcock for me! The magazine allows for stories with the supernatural - and that tends to keep the reader guessing until the end, as opposed to the typical cop/detective/sleuth tales in EQ. I love the often-moody atmosphere and the scene-building in Hitchcock.
I have always wondered about the magazine but never read one until recently. I loved the articles and was surprized by the fact there is more than Sci Fi & Fantasy listed in this magazine. It was nice having a preview of TV shows I watch (although some of the material had already aired prior to the magazine coming out). I have even picked up a couple of books from the reviews in the magazine (and I am not a big Sci Fi/Fantasy book reader). I wish I had subscribed long ago.
Every issue of this mag has a great cover and some excellent artwork within. I used to grab it at the supermarket but its circulation has decreased and I recently bit the bullet and went ahead and subscribed. I'm really glad I did; the issues seem to have only gotten better during the hiatus between the former abundance on shelves and my recent decision to aggressively track a subscription down.
Some of the best new authors are represented with excellent genre fiction and more established authors drop by regularly to contribute a short story or excerpt. All of the writing is very professional and imaginative and the featured interviews and movie close-ups are also highly informative and entertaining. I'd put it up against Analog or Asimov's ... There is a regular "Good Old Days" magazine and the "Specials" is a complement to that (although it is a separate subscription). I subscribed to both for my parents who were born in the early 1930s.
These are their favorite magazines and they read them both from cover to cover, sometimes twice, as soon as they arrive. I guess there is a real lack of anything similar and they always have such fond memories that stem from the stories they read.

I love this magazine!!! As if it isn't hard enough to find anyone out there with a good appreciation of independent film (and by appreciation, I also mean knowledge), but then you have to deal with all these film nerds who think that if it wasn't done on a shoestring budget by a no-name director, it must be bad. FILMMAKER does an excellent job of giving an overview of the world of independent film, while still providing good discussions of some more mainstream films. It's tough, when reviewing and writing criticism of any art form, to know what to discuss, and I think that FILMMAKER does this.

As an aficionado of all things historic, old, and traditional, I subscribed to "The Saturday Evening Post." I was disappointed by what I received. With the exception of the excellent illustrations by Norman Rockwell, the magazine was largely advertisements for prescription medications and puff pieces about popular actors, authors, and other celebrities. This is not a worthy heir to the legacy of its founder, Benjamin Franklin, and the many gifted and talented individuals who have been associated with the magazine throughout its history. Simply put, it was not worth the price of a subscription.
Granta is a great periodical. I read quite a few issues from years back in addition to newer issues. The writers featured are not really as "hip" as they are talented and engaging. Well assembled, interesting, great format and timely.
The writing in the Paris Review is probably unmatched elsewhere in a popularly available magazine. Other magazines and reviews sometimes have top quality pieces, maybe one or two excellent pieces in each issue, but I found that the high standards of quality in the Paris Review is very rarely matched. The Paris Review unlike most publications is systematically excellent.
The fictional stories are interesting and seemingly unique. The poetry is vivid and compelling. The interviews and non-fiction pieces also are no less enticing, excellent and important. If you are interested in writing, in reading compelling fiction and non-fiction, or the creative arts generally, I strongly recommend this magazine.
