I started reading the magazine in college. Utne was the first magazine I ever really enjoyed reading, I suddenly "got it". I would really like to subscribe to this magazine but, they have an automatic renewal policy, and I am personally against anyone taking my money without permission. I also don't subscribe to anything by Rodale Publishing for this reason; Men's Health, Fitness, Prevention, etc.
The quality of the writing in this publication is highly inconsistent. There are feature articles that are amateurishly written, poorly structured and unfocused. The writers thrust themselves into the articles with embarrassing regularity, rabbitting on about irrelevant and indulgent personal information. Poorly edited, with boring introductory paragraphs and horrible layout and design. This is a lesson on how NOT to write, edit and produce a publication.
My beef is with Amazon's advertising "up to 75% off" for subscriptions. I've checked the rates for VQR, Poetry, Writer's Digest, and Poets & writers, and I'm four for four: Amazon's rates are either exactly the same as those posted on these journals' websites, or (in the case of Writer's Digest and P&W) more expensive. It's nice, I guess, that Amazon is providing more exposure for these journals; nonetheless, for them to claim they're offering a discount, while not exactly a lie (since they're offering a discount over the per-copy price), is deceiving, as they don't seem to be offering a cheaper rate than that already offered by the journals. Caveat, as always, emptor.
Tin House is a terrific literary magazine. It's full of progressive, often experimental, prose, poetry, essays, etc. Check out "Bestial Noise" which is a collection of writing by many Tin House writers.
I read a lot of literary journals, and I just came across the Florida Review. The current issue has a few of the best short stories I've read in a long, long time--and the poetry was absolutely superb. I'm glad I can subscribe on Amazon...and I'm looking forward to my next issue.
I have been collecting books off and on for over 20 years. Before I started reading Fine Books & Collections in 2004, however; I was quite ignorant to book collecting outside my specific area of interest. Over the years I have become much more sophisticated and knowledgeable about collecting thanks to FB&C.
Each issue covers a broad spectrum of subjects ranging from the basics of collecting to explanations of particular areas of specialty. They have regular columns on collector and dealer profiles, maps, fine press, auction reports, and so on. It is the only magazine that I read cover to cover and enjoy every minute of it. Even the advertisements are interesting because it helps me to find additional resources and connections. ... Read More:
I agree, SCRIPT is the better buy. Creative Screenwriting (CS) paints every review/interview with the same glowing brush (no matter how bad the film is) whereas SCRIPT really does offer an insider view into the process. Script also offers Television section in each of its issues where CS only provides the occasional sub-feature. And as a CS subscriber I can tell you that the magazine always arrives late to my door - sometimes up to two weeks after it can be found on the shelves.
I really love books, and love to read, so I really enjoy this magazine. The beginning of the magazine has articles on authors, their lives, new books coming out, etc. There are also articles for aspiring writers with tips, etc. The rest of the magazine is broken down by genre with quick little reviews on many new books to be released that month. I also enjoy looking at the ads, seeing what books are coming out soon, the covers, etc. This is a fun magazine to read, or just to flip through and see what catches your eye.
If you like mysteries you will like this magazine. It gives you information about authors and at times you will find out snippets about unusual mysteries. This magazine also has short stories in it. I am a fledgling writer of mysteries so I appreciate Mystery Scene. I do believe, however, that a person who simply enjoys mystery stories will enjoy this magazine. I can't wait to get the next issue in the mail!
We gave this magazine as a gift to our granddaughter who will soon be 14. Our Library director recommended this magazine as suitable for gifted children who enjoy poetry. Our granddaughter writes her own poetry. She likes Cicada so much she asked us to renew it.
