This is a literary magazine, and as you would expect it deals with the current events of the literary world with reviews of current books, articles on upcoming authors, etc. However it also adds features on classics (articles on classic authors, investigations into themes which span the ages, etc.) which give it a good amount of historical perspective.
Its opinions and reviews are so much more valuable because they are usually quite level-headed, and avoid the "flavor of the month" syndrome of other magazines which are just fronts for editors' publicity outfits.
4,5 stars would have been a more fitting rating, but since the option is not available, I'll round it upwards to five.
I found the magazine at a local bookstore and decided to pick it up. I was immediately engaged by the Lovecraftian slant that the stories were focused on. However, as I have read the magazine over a number of issues, it is expanding to encompass the fuzzy area called dark fiction. In their efforts, William Jones and his staff are doing an excellent job. They have well-known and up and coming authors featured, and the magazine has a reasonable amount of advertising, indicating that there are other businesses that recognize the quality of the magazine.
The magazine also features regular nonfiction articles. They are as follows:
WRITER AT LARGE - A combination memoir and article about writing, Lupoff has been the one writing ... Read More:
Editors of SUBTROPICS have garnered work from some of the top literary writers (poetry, fiction, essays) of our time. They've also dipped into some of the work of lesser known writers from earlier decades, a nice way to expand your experience. All in all, this is first rate stuff. And the covers are beautiful.
Video Watchdog have been around for years and continue to produce a top quality home video magazine. Editor Tim Lucas has assembled an impressive staff of writers that are very knowledgable and clearly do their home work. There are some amazing in-depth reviews and feature articles that focus primarily on the horror and fantasy genres.
In addition, they also have a book review column that I've used numerous times to buy film books and a soundtrack column that covers obscure, hard-to-find albums as well as mainstream stuff -- very good!
This is one of the few magazines I subscribe to and actually read cover-to-cover. High recommended!

I find it quite funny that almost 3000 people have posted a review for the DaVinci Code, and no one has reviewed AQR, one of the world's foremost forums of contemporary literature. As a reader of short stories I can say the 30 or so stories published each year in this magazine help set the trend for fiction writing, consistently, year on year. Some of these stories are simply magnificent - the best I've read anywhere. Journals like this are terribly under-rated, and their only objective is to produce the highest quality writing. There is negligible payout and no profit involved. This is art here, folks, in the truest sense of the word.

I was compelled to write a review after I received my new copy of the Missouri Review (MR) a few weeks ago. Before I get into MR, I just wanted to say that they've recently changed the design of their journal for the better. They've always had a fairly nice design, but the new MR is slightly larger with excellent cover art (so you'll want to display it on your coffee table) and some nice art illuminating the insides as well. (as well as their usual goofy cartoons which are never as good as the New Yorker's but can occasionally be side-splittingly funny).
If you are unfamiliar with journals, you might think that The MR is a magazine about Missouri. This is not the case. The MR is a showcase for talented writers in a variety of fields from all ... Read More:
