Although entitled "Guitar Masterpieces" the music is MOSTLY big band with some guitar lead. This CD does not feature the guitar. Very disappointing.....

This is an excellent CD to introduce yourself to Segovia or to have a nice collection of many of his better works. The Guitar is well recorded given the era in which it was recorded.

I love this CD. My father had a record that I used to listen to when I was younger and I couldn't find it for years and had forgotten his name. Thanks to Amazon, I was able to search for it and listen to the clips. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

This two disc CD contains much great peaceful music some of which you may had heard before. It is well worth adding to anyones classical music collection. Play this at the end of a hectic day and appreciate how music really can help calm you down.

This CD transports you to a place without time, stress or concerns. You quickly stop thinking "how can he play like that?" and just accept that you are transported to a peaceful place.

Parkening sets the standard for others to compare to. Enjoyable tribute to Segovia. The type of guitar mastery that one can relax to after a hard days work. Enough said.

I didn't realize what I was getting into when I tried out this collection of Segovia. I wanted to learn about the man and his music, and, WOW, what a bargain this collection turned out to be!
From Solos to Concertina's, there is so much music here that it will take me months to digest it all. I am very impressed with the quality of the mastering, Deutsch Grammophon did a wonderfull job at preserving the soundstage of the recordings, as well as the fidelity. Amazing clarity!
Components used for listening: TAD-60 Amplifier, Adcom GCD-700 CD player, Adcom GFP-710 Preamplifier, Altec 604-8G's in 620B Cabinets.

Segovia recorded many pieces several times in his career -- those of Bach especially -- and the anthologist is presented with a thorny problem: to go for performance or recording quality, or a balance of both? By and large the choice here is happy (especially since the artist's earlier Bach recordings are available, on the EMI anthology), and John Duarte's transcription of the 3rd 'Cello Suite was recorded only once.
But the "Chaconne", which should be the crown jewel of the album, is a big disappointment. Although recorded in 1954, it sounds absolutely limp compared to the wild passion of the 1947 version for Musicraft anthologised so many times on LP; so much so, that I find it painful to listen to.
And in any case, these performances ... Read More:

I am all for breaking from tradition, as it simply creates new tradition, hence the solo flamenco guitarist via Ramon Montoya, Sabicas, Mario Escudero and Paco de Lucia.
That being said, this album is pure trash. Stray from a tradition, fine, but what about the musicality? For instance, the music just goes round and round and round, without any interesting changes, nothing to touch your soul. Not even a tickle. The pieces chosen are radically stripped down and have become shadows of their former selves. To add further insult, you must endure the most funny drum machine accompanying rhythms, which sound as bad as those on my late 80's keyboard.
All of this is assembled to deface Ernesto Lecuona's beloved Malagueña, rearranging it in such ... Read More:

I'll keep this short... if you love the guitar you need this recording along with the other Deutsche-Grammaphon complilations (The Art of Segovia and the boxed set). The recordings are beautifully remastered!
They didn't see fit to put the recitation of the poem on "Platero & I," just Segovia's guitar work, understandably. You can find it with the recitation on one of the MCA Classics releases from the late 80's/early 90's (The Segovia Collection, Vol. 8), which are brilliant for their organization of the Maestro's catalogue by category.
