Astrud Gilberto was the Brazilian Dionysian lark per excellence and the embodiment of the sensuality, lyricism and tropical alluring of the best known Latin American music all over the world. Despite the terrible circumstances that made she left us before the used, she found in Antonio Carlos Jobim the perfect key for her to exhibit her sensitiveness, charisma and unforgettable charm.

This album picks up a very significant part of her musical legacy.

The Silver Collection: The Astrud Gilberto Album

As a long time Astrud Gilberto fan, I was extremely pleased with this collection. Astrud's voice is beautiful, sweet and haunting. The overall sound and orchestration is beautiful (I do not understand the other reviewers complaints regarding the sound quality and orchestration). I highly recommend this CD.

As a long time Astrud Gilberto fan, I was extremely pleased with this collection. Astrud's voice is beautiful, sweet and haunting. The overall sound and orchestration is beautiful (I do not understand the other reviewers complaints regarding the sound quality and orchestration). I highly recommend this CD.

The Diva Series

The Diva CD Series gives us a great album of songs performed by Astrud Gilberto. Astrud's voice was singularly beautiful; although at first blush she merely sang flat and didn't have a wide vocal range, in actuality Astrud could deliver a song right alongside the best of them! Astrud sang with all her heart and soul and this CD proves it.

"Agua De Beber" starts the CD with Astrud Gilberto performing a marvelous bossa nova number; and the male backup vocals enhance the beauty of this number. Astrud's voice is as clear as a bell and she aces this easily. "Agua De Beber" is a major highlight of this album. Great! Catch Me If You Can

The way people have been talking about this score, from the reviews to the liner notes, you'd think it was a stylistic counterpart to "Checkmate." In truth, there is minimal jazz or even pseudo-jazz content in this score. It is mostly orchestral with occasional jazzy touches, such as vibes or sax, but it's hardly a return to his days as Johnny Williams (as some have suggested). And the handful of tunes by the likes of Sinatra, Dusty, and Getz/Gilberto are readily available elsewhere in more appropriate settings. On its own terms, the score is certainly pleasant, but it's hardly a "jazz score" as defined by the likes of Mancini, Lalo Schifrin, Johnny Mandel, Kenyon Hopkins, and others.

Astrud for Lovers

Astrud For Lovers is a fine installment in this "For Lovers" CD series. The quality of the sound is great and I love that artwork. Astrud is truly in excellent form throughout on this CD; and just one listen proves it! This is fine music for lovers only.

"Only Trust Your Heart" starts the CD with Astrud Gilberto showing off her vocal talents; she handles complicated tempo and key changes very well. Astrud makes it sounds and look easy; but of course we know that it really wasn't so easy to be able to sing like that. Astrud did have a great deal of vocal talent and that's what enabled her to sing complicated songs like "Only Trust Your Heart." There are some beautiful, romantic, popular tracks on this CD.
I agree with one of the reviewers - if you are new to her material there are better recordings available. The tracks on this CD have been selected from different LP's. Some of the tracks present themselves very well. The microphone glitch mentioned by another reviewer is not much of a problem - it does not spoil the number. In fact that particular track has extremely well captured vocals. On the down side there are few tracks that have considerable tape hiss and degraded sound quality - to a point where they interfere with the listening experience.

The Shadow of Your Smile

This is a charming album. The sound is dated, yes, but the remastered edition is luscious. The instrumental and vocal timbres are very warm and sweet.

The only caveat I have is that the vocals are not as solid as The Astrud Gilberto Album. That one sounds very confident throughout. Here, some of the singing sounds tentative. Maybe that by itself may be appealing to some listeners. I do not have that reaction. It sounds like Astrud was not entirely comfortable with the some of the songs or wasn't thoroughly familiar with them.

Also, on Fly Me To The Moon Astrud never sounds exactly on-key, which is a bit disconcerting. Who Can I Turn To is similarly afflicted. It makes me wonder if she was unable to hear the orchestral playback properly. ... Read More:

Beach Samba

I got "Beach Samba" and "September 17, 1969" for Christmas 2007. Of the two, I like "Beach Samba" better. Released in 1967, it perfectly captures the breeziness of that year's music. "Beach Samba" is fun, jazzy, up-tempo, and well produced. Astrud's vocals are as charming as ever, and it doesn't have pop pretentious in the way "September 17, 1969" does (a cover of "Light My Fire," really?). On "Beach Samba," she is still close to her Latin/bossa roots. Most of the songs here are in English. "Canoeiro" (which, near as I can tell, is about Brazil's canoe people) is in Portuguese. "Face That I Love" is one of her better songs, which I had first heard years ago on her wonderful "Finest Hour" CD. "Face that I Love" makes me think of couples strolling on the boardwalk as ...
