I never thought I would one day stop being a fan of Ben Folds, but this CD did it. No matter what he says, it is a divorce CD and not a good one at that. Leaving aside whether it's mature to record hate songs against the mother of your kids for them to hear, the album is uneven and tries to hard to be clever. The fun hooks and interesting story telling are largely absent. It just doesn't measure up to the old days. I miss the Five.

I love his voice, lyrics, piano talent, and just the way he combines rock and jazz and other things I can't think of names for. Seriously if you have never heard of ben folds before just listen to him please. He is my favorite pianist. I was lucky enough to see him live, and now I experience all the music with a new perspective. And if you play piano, I recommend also purchasing the piano book for this album.

There are several versions of "Way to Normal" being offered. This, the "Super Deluxe" version, includes the 12-track CD, the DVD performances, an extra CD with improv songs recorded live, and a vinyl double album of the same songs on the CD.
I have to say, it was a lot of fun opening up the huge, bright red-fabric covered boxed set album with gold lettering and dig through to find all the cool stuff inside. I think a lot of the whole experience of buying an album has been lost now that we can all download MP3s and don't have to listen to an album in its entirety. This bundle, including the double albuum, kind of brings that back somewhat, and it's nice.
This edition is the only place to get the improv songs, I believe, ... Read More:

This is the last Ben Folds Five album I came across. It really is strange how they've evolved yet how familiar it feels. As always Folds throws out hooks like they were nothing. To call it, "simple" would be inaccurate and strikes a similar tone as Whatever and Ever Amen. Maybe toned down on the bitterness. But something is different in a good way. Perhaps they weren't as worried about becoming pop artists since this was their first album on a small label and all.
At any rate if you like ANY of Ben Fold's stuff this shouldn't disappoint and makes for a good starting point along with the aforementioned Whatever and Ever Amen.

Just kidding! I love this CD! Although the additional content on this reissue content was best saved for a LP cause it's kinda sort of buying a nice steak and getting taffy and cotton candy on there too. If you don't mind skipping the occasional odd track, there are some on there that will blow you away. Take a chance and buy this CD.

I am unsure as to how I missed knowing of Ben Folds. Simply amazing and traditionally not a piano enthusiast, I can't get enough of his talent.

The only songs that I think are good are Army, Your Redneck Past, and Jane. The other songs are not bad, but just kind of there. They have no bite.

Ben Folds seems to like to run the scales from the pretty to the profane. This is fine except there doesn't seem to be a reason for the profane other than Folds thinks it cute to write songs with bad words in them. His talent is such that this sort of acting out for his own proposes seems beneath him and his conciderable skills. Since these are older songs from an earlier part of his career my feeling is he has indeed moved beyond this sort of childishness and with later works like "Songs For Silverman" he now is in full flower. So, while this older CD of internet "goodies" is interesting it's also very hit and miss both lyrically and tunefully...
