I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition before knowing I could get the mp3s from the CDs at Amazon. I give it four stars just because of the CDs.
The production of the first DVD is not the best (haven't seen the second one). As another review states, is not Score. I would say image quality is not for today's big HDTVs. The audio doesn't sound live, you can't hear the crowd. Still, I have to say, it was great to somehow revive the experience of being in a show from their 2007 tour.
What I didn't like is that if feels as if this DVD was never planned, but at the last moment, they came up with any footage they had and tried to put it together.
I would say: If you're a die-hard fan, get it. If not, get ... Read More:

I'm a very big fan of dream theater and this compilation was very very good, although i wanted a few songs instead of others but it's pretty cool how they remastered songs.

For some odd reason, I had 'Octavarium' for two years before I even bothered to listen to the title track. I often find it difficult to get into the more Yes/King Crimson/Floyd-ish 70s-style prog-rock so I figured I wouldn't enjoy it too much, and....well, lemme cover the rest of the album first. The whole disc revolves around the theme of numbers (particularly 8 and 3) and various other themes (terrorism in 'Sacrificed Sons', ungrateful people in 'Never Enough', and a return to Portnoy's AA saga in the killer 'The Root of All Evil'). All of them are brought together in the mammoth title track at the end.
1. The Root of All Evil 9/10 (solid crunching heavy opener which brings in old motifs from 'This Dying Soul' since this is the 3rd part ... Read More:

I can't believe that I have ever seen a rant about prog rock, instead of a review for CD before. Who the heck is this Adem dude anyway? "Rock is supposed to be mindless". Well that is nice to know, now that I have listened to decades of great music with great lyrics by many, many bands that so many other people think are wonderful.
By the way, this is an excellent recording. Don't always pay attention to all of the reviews by the Amazon personnel!

I never heard of this group before I saw them on Youtube. I liked a few songs off this album when I saw them on Youtube. This is a great album. One of the best progressive rock albums in my collection.

Purchased this CD about a year ago due to all the great reviews posted on Amazon. I have three Dream Theater CD's, Metropolis Part II, Train of Thought and Change of Seasons. Train of Thought is really good and Metropolis Part II is one of my favorite CD's.
Listened for a few times when I received, and I wasn't very impressed. Pull Me Under, Under a Glass Moon and Another Day have their moments, but overall just wasn't much to grab my attention.
Recently decided to give it another listen to see if I just put it to the side too quickly. Sometimes it just take more listens for an album to grow on you. After five or six more listens, sad to say I still don't care for this very much.

I fail to see how anyone can say images and words is better than this album. I love the original DT as much as the next fan, but I actually feel everything after Awake almost outdoes anythign previous, especially this album and Scenes From a Memory. I'm not absolutelly in love with the 2nd concept cd in this set, but it has its moments. That said, the first cd with five nice, long DT style prog tracks is surelly some of the best in their catalogue. I honestly don't know why everyone wants to compare all their later cd's to Images and Words and Awake...those two albums just don't compare at all.
I don't like writing a huge review about every track or anything to that degree, so all I will say is that, if you loved the Scenes... album, you will love this ... Read More:

The Train of Thought Tour was arguably the strongest of DT's career. These songs really shine and can cave in the roof of a stadium. This is where the crowd can tear up the floor and rave. And James can RAP. Ridiculously powerful. Train of Thought RULES!!!

So, my story for this album is kind of an interesting one. I've been a fan of Dream Theater for many years now, but like many I was less than thrilled with the last couple of albums they put out. "Train of Thought" was boring, stale, and mechanical, and "Octavarium", while a much stronger effort, didn't really hold my interest for long. So, that sadly resulted in very low expectations for this album. In fact, I almost passed up on it entirely. However, after finally picking it up, many repeated listens, and an excellent live show last year, I am glad to say that they've really bounced back. This is by far the strongest album they've made in many years. Not their best by a longshot, but still a huge step up.
Like "Train of Thought", it's mostly pretty ... Read More:

It's clear that this album was mixed terribly, but if you are aware of DT LIVE, then you will hopefully understand why this is now my favorite album. The songs have an incredible beauty to them, and honestly, Derek Sherinian is a big part of that. What a talented musician. Far better than Kevin Moore ever was. Anna Lee, Take away my pain, Hells kitchen, Burning my soul, Just let me Breath, Lines in the sand, and the B-sides, Speak to me, Raise the Knife, and maybe my VERY FAVORITE DT SONG, Where are you now. DAMN.
